7MM BR in a Handi
« on: January 23, 2010, 03:40:53 AM »
Has anyone converted a 7-08 barrel to a 7MM BR ?  I am thinking about trying to convert a barrel to 7MM BR for a youth rifle.  If it will work, it should be a good rifle for a kid to shoot. The 7MM BR is known for very little recoil and accuracy. Its been a favorite for the serious target shooters.  Its seems like it would be simple. Making a chamber adapter to shorten the chamber length is all that it should take. The case size (except length) is the same as the 7-08. The factory extractor/ejector wouldnt have to be changed either.

Or just use Trail Boss in the 7mm-08.  ;)

I doubt you would see the difference in accuracy unless you were using a benchrest dedicated gun between an 08 and the b.r. Hodgen has youth loads listed with H4895 around 2500-2600 fps and Trail Boss loads from 1200-1475 fps, with jacketed bullets.

I agree - Would be far easier to use Trail Boss and move up to H4895 as the youngster gets older and probably quite a bit cheaper.   The H4895 loads duplicate a 7x30 Waters which will kill a deer 150-175 yards easy.  Put a good recoil pad on the gun too.

Have fun!  Post some pics of the youngin' enjoying a day at the range.

Another problem is Remington is not making 7MMBR brass on a regular basis anymore . You can still get it but it's expensive and may not be available much longer .If you go with the BR you may find yourself forming it from 308's.I have a pistol and it's great but brass is a problem.
