range report BC Classic
« on: January 27, 2010, 10:07:50 AM »
I've had the gun for months, but just got a chance to shoot today. I had one box of Blackhills Cowboy .405s and one box of Remington JSP 405's.  With all the posts about sight height, I figured I was in for a front sight change, because mine came with the high front globe. But I swapped out the WGRS on the rear for a Williams Foolproof with target knobs.

I was surprised to find I could hit dead on at 100 yards with the Foolproof set about midway; plenty of room to adjust either way. I ran out of ammo before I could measure group size (I was too busy getting the elevation right), but I think it shoots groups smaller than a quarter. The Remington ammo shot tighter than the cowboy stuff. With my toboggan hat between my shoulder and the stock, I could shoot either of those rounds all day from the bench.

Another surprise for me (because I've never owned a 45-70) was the amount of drop a 45-70 has between 50 and 100 yards. Didn't measure in inches, but it looks like about 2, maybe 3 inches, certainly a distinct difference between that and the .308 I'm used to shooting. It makes me wonder if the Foolproof will adjust enough to hit at 200 yards.

Anyway, I love this gun! Who'd of thunk it? Super tight groups from such an inexpensive rifle. With the long barrel, the FP sight on the back and the globe on the front, it looks like a target gun with class. I can't wait for deer season. Only 10 more months. In the meantime, I've got lots of reloading and testing to do. I've got a new can of Trail Boss, three different boxes of cast bullets from Beartooth and LBT. All I need now are the Lee Shaver inserts and reloading dies, both of which are on order.

Thanks to everyone here who have posted their success and problems shooting the 45-70. Without you, my success today would have been a failrure.

I'm just an ignorant old man....but I don't understand the drop between 50 and 100 yards....the bullet should be rising.???????

That's the kind of range report I like to read.  Let us know how it does when you test it out on paper.  I've been close to buying one several times.

Yeah the bullet doesn't rise to meet the line of the scope above the bore.  The trajectory with those real easy loads should be about like a 22...but more like 10 22's melded into one :D

Pete, I might be wrong. I adjusted the elevation so many times, I might have misinterpreted the targets. The only thing I know for sure, is that the BC shoots the tightest groups at 100 yards of any iron-sighted rifle I've ever fired, and that includes my Springfield M1A, which has sights every bit as good as the BC.  When I was a kid with good eyes, the most accurate gun I had was a Marlin bolt-action .22 magnum fitted with a peep sight, but even it didn't compare with the BC at that distance.

Whoever reads this: If you ain't got an H&R BC 45-70, skip a car payment and get one.

Just for comparison, Bernie shoots 1500fps 500gr loads in his BC to 600yds with the FP-TK rear sight and the .404" 17a front sight.  ;)

That would depend on what front sight is on the barrel, the .494" should get you to 200yds, the .584"(most common) won't get you to 100yds, the .404" would be my choice for trapdoor loads.

I don't know if they're stamped on the bottom of the dovetail or not, don't remember, but you can measure it from the bottom of the dovetail to the center of the globe.

I was able to get my BC out yesterday, was using a cast 360gr bullet w/gc, in front of a stout load of H4198.  I also tote the WIlliams TK peep sight, but I have lowered my front fight to the Lyman 17AHB (.404"), gives me plenty o'reach thats for sure, and my 100yd groups were sub-inch.

Bring on them hogs.....

I believe I asked this question before but I don't remember the answer  ;) what is the best front sight .404 or .494 for shooting from 50 yards to 200, 300, 400 yards and maybe more. What are the advantages of the .404 over the .494? The .404 is adequate for short range like 50-100 yards?
