45-70 and 223
« on: January 26, 2010, 03:43:30 PM »
New to your forum and new to handi's .I have had a Handi (standard 223 with wood stock)  but hadn't put a scope on it until this weekend. I got interested cause a friend brought me his handi to put a scope on and he ask me to load some 45-70s for it . Used 51grs of H4198 and a 300gr Rem HP bullet . Took it out to the range and at 100 yards was getting about 11/2" which supprised me (I don't know why).At 50 my 3 shot groups were all touching each other .I really hated giving this gun back .Well mine has just been sitting there for the last year or two and I scoped it up and got it ready . I 've been traveling on business a lot the last couple of years and all my projects have been on hold .I'm kind of excited about this little gun .

Welcome to the madness, sickness or what ever.Meds are dispensed here daily. The 223 should be a shooter. The reloads on that 45-70 is what I used to shoot in my t/c pistol.Packed a pretty good wallop.Dropped it back to 49gr.w/350 gr.JSPs.Shot excellent.Have fun working up a load on your 223.Slow

Darn good Handi combo there if you get the .45/70. I have the .45/70 Buffalo Classic with a factory fit .204 Ruger barrel myself. Anything one can't do the other will. You have to get the .45/70...I think it is a requirement for membership on this forum ;)!!!!
