The sight should be a 17AMI .494", but most come with the 17AUG .584" 38-55 Target sight which will put 45-70 rounds very low at 100yds, sights are measured from the bottom of the dovetail to the center of the globe.

Lee Shaver has a beautiful set of laser cut sight inserts for it (any 17A and others) very reasonably priced.
With the std set and his (and he has the silouette insets too) you are good for any light condition.

Links to the Lee Shaver inserts and a lot more can be found in the FAQs Long Range Sights link.
