Marlin 336 in .44 Mag
« on: October 15, 2003, 09:43:47 AM »
Saw a used Marlin M-336 chambered for .44 Mag. This is apparently discontinued.  It has a longer action, however,  than the 1894 marlin which is used for the .44 Mag chambering.

Is there any advantage to the M-336 in .44 Magnum?

Can you shoot .44 Magnum rounds in .444  Marlin rifles?

Advocate - I'm gonna stick my neck out here for a bit regarding that Marlin 336 in 44 Magnum.  The 336 was designed as a longer action to handle the longer cased rifle calibers whereas the 1894 was designed to handle the shorter pistol calibers.  I think (that is, I think that is what I have read previously about the difference 'twixt the two).

I think the 336 in pistol cartridge chamberings was discontinued because of problems encountered by trying to load and chamber short cartridges through an action originally designed for longer cartridges; but again, I'm not exact-a-tively certain about that.  However, as a direct result there may NOT be any advantage to a 336 in 44 magnum as the Marlin 1894s are known for their strength.......

Can ya'll shoot 44 magnums in a 444 Marlin.  I have.  Beartooth Bullets will tell you it can be done and they have done it, as well as shoot the 44 Spl and the 44 Russian from a 444 Marlin.  Some folks say 'No', because the case size at the base is smaller than the 444 Marlin but when I fired 44 magnums through mine I didn't see anything that would indicate case stretching at that point.  You would have to load them single shot but it can be done.  If you do, becareful not to leave a lead ring in the chamber that would adversely impact the chambering of the 444.  HTH.  Mikey.

I take it the rifle has a straight grip?  I had one I bought new in 1965.  Marlin called it the "Texan."  If you can find an old Shooters' Bible from those years it will have it.  Mine never gave any problems feeding or anything.  In fact, I am not sure why I sold it other than to get money together for college.  It's one of those guns I wouldn't mind having back...

I have one, I bought new way back then  It was made from 1963 or 4 to 1966 I believe.  I shoots fine, no feeding problems (as long as you use a conical taper-nose bullet) it just has a long lever throw, so it's easier to short-stroke and misfeed if you're in a hurry, like in a Cowboy Action match...  I beleive it is a 336-T.

Might be a wrong thing to suggest but you have an opportunity with the long action, ie rechamber to a longer cartridge, 445 supermag 444 marlin or something in between. I do know that the 44 dies will load them all.
Take care and have fun. Swany

I have shot 44 mag in a Marlin 444. Accuracy was poor. The biggest problem is that if you try to load them out of the mag you will get a double feed and a jam.

I believe you will find your 44mg cases nearly ruined from firing in a 444, since the 444 has a larger diameter case.  Depending on how soft the brass is it could be too tough to seal the chamber then you might have a problem with gas escaping back through the action, and possibly into your face.
