Howdy,
Has anyone tried out the Taurus 1911 chambered in .38 Super? I noticed that they are finally available and am hoping that all the bugs were worked out with the .45's. I must confess that I have a couple modern Taurus arms and have never had so much as a hiccough with one. Then I hear the stories about terminal lockups and year-long waits for service.
I do want a .38 Super in a 1911, though. The Taurus appears to be a good value if they are reliable as my 24/7.

I just got home from one of my "candy" stores and one of them followed me home. ;D  Just yesterday I told a friend of mine not to buy a gun, just barrow one of mine and I wasn't going to buy any more as I have more now than I can play with :P.  The price was to good, $549.95, and after looking at the 45 and the 38, we switched mags, measured barrels and checked feed ramps.  Looks like a new barrel, magazine and recoil spring and I will have a switch barrel 1911. ;)  Can't figure out why the 38 is $100 less than the same set-up in a 45.  Of course there is no brass, loaded ammo or dies for the 38 Super at most of the stores here.  Will have to order some in before I can play with it, maybe give me some time to play with some of the others I haven't shot yet. :-[.  This is my second Taurus, the other is a 44 mag, ported that I have had zero problems with.  DP

I have only seen two Taurus 1911 38 Supers for sale in Tucson,  Az.  One was $630.00 the other was $715.  Sounds like you got a good buy! 8)  Let us know how she shoots as I had another model Taurus 38Super that wouldn't hit the broud side of a barn! ???  Waiting to see how the 1911 shoots before diving in again.

Well since we haven't heard how the 38 Super 1911 shot, when I found one for $504.99 brand new- I bought it.  The one I bought has a heavy trigger which I hope lightens up with break-in.  With concentration I was able to keep my shots in six inch circle at 25 yards.  My .45 Bisley shoots groups half that size, but the guns new and not broken in.  Midway has carbide reloading dies for $26.95 vs $78.00 for RCBS.  Needless to say I ordered the Lee set.  At $32.00 for American Eagle ammo I can't aford not to reload.  Also it seems all you can find on the shelf are solids so I'll reload my own hollow points. 8)

Do these headspace on the case mouth or rim? I have heard the 38 super is popular south of the border.

To tell the truth on the Taurus I'm not sure.  The chamber has very pronounced edges so I would think so, but they do not adress it in the manual. In fact my manual is for the .45ACP and does'nt mention the .38 Super.  Kimber has thiers headspace on the case mouth and are reportedly very acurate.  The old Colts used the rim and suposedly were less acurate.  When I got the trigger under control I could stay centered with little trouble and this gun has potential for good acuracy.  As to the popularity south of the border the answer is yes, very.  The fancier it is the bettter it sells in that market.  That also goes for Mexican-Americans.  Mine is a Plain Jane in that respect;  Taurus calls my finish blue but to me it is closer to black, with black grips.  Hope this answers your question.

.38 Super has a semi rimmed case and is intended to headspace on the rim.

As originally made yes the 38 super headspaced on the rim in original guns. Most of these guns did not shoot worth a hoot and target models were made to headspace on the case mouth.

The Taurus headspaces on the case mouth  I picked mine up for $500.00 the gun shoots fine.  Midway has the carbide dies for $26.00 by Lee.  I purchased a set and they work fine.  Although the 38 Super is 356 it works fine with jacketed cartriges in 355 alowing 9mm bullets.  I loaded up some 147 Hps over 2400 and they work fine.  124 Grn fmj's also shot great great over unique.  Happy with mine, good luck with yours. 8)  Factory American Eagle runs $31.00 a box out here in Tucson.  Two boxes gave me my brass to reload. ;D  Taurus recommends a 500 round breakin.  Only run 200 so far have more reloading to do. ;D

Just an update, I had no problems with how the Taurus shot or functioned.  I did find the Taurus had a nonsupported feed ramp.  Higher pressure rounds would cause a buldge at his point.  I treaded the Taurus for a EAA Witness in 38 Super with a fully supported chamber.  Paid $504 for the Taurus got evan trade for EAA he wanted $450 for.  I liked the features of the Taurus but wanted the fully supported chamber. 8)

That 38 Super is a wonderful cartridge...I loved shooting it at a local range...A guy there had a worked over 1911 in 38 Super that he let me shoot...Loved it.

I have a PT 1911 45, wanted a 38 Super, got tired of waitng. Bought a RIA 38 Super, installed fiber optic sights, polished ramp, now a very reliable and very accurate gun. Love the round for sure!

The Taurus PT1911 38 Super I had shot dead on point of aim and handled full length cartridges,(1.280).  The EAA requires you keep the cartridge length no longer than 1.275 or they wont load in the mag.  The EAA also shoots an inch low of point of aim.  But the EAA holds 16 and the Taurus held 9 so I guess that makes up for having to hold a little high.  I had to get a heavier recoil spring for the EAA and I'll end up getting adjustable sights down the road, so the Taurus was maybe the better gun if you are willing to just shoot the lighter loads, or buy the shooting star comp brass for your reloads.  Hind sight is 20/20. 8)
