yeah...my next dumb question was gonna be whether or not i need the small base die set or not....hope to get a few replies on that. One more question(another dumb one) is that if i need small base that would mean that i need just a small base full length sizing die, right?

I use full-length resizing dies, but they are not small base.

I have a 1981 version of the 760 pump-gun.  I have to small-base size my reloads.  I would have feeding problems very rarely but, did not want to take a chance of my gun hanging-up at a critical moment.  Most factory rounds are even "narrower" than your small-base dies will size them.  However, if you choose to purchase the small-base die, you can pretty much forget about feeding problems related to fat cartridges.  If you run your reloads through it and, it consistantly feeds them flawlessly, you may be OK to full-length size only.

I would trim all brass to the same length, size, and then determine the optimal overall length to put the ogive a couple of thousandths off the lands.  Take some time and put in the effort to build some top-notch ammo for that wonderful old rifle!  Then go kill something.

I hope you enjoy that fine old 760 as much as I do mine.

That's a handsome 760. These rifles are commonly encountered in Pennsylvania where you may not hunt with autoloaders. Years back there were a number of articles in Outdoor Life about the Benoit family and how they hunted trophies up in NH or Maine. They favored the 760 for their style of hunting. Good luck with it. While I certainly don't need any more rifles, a clean 760 in .35 Rem would be a temptation I couldn't pass up.

hi guys....it's been awhile since i checked this post. Moving forward on this rifle i've acquired some brass, some pulled M2 projectiles, should get dies in the mail tomorrow, and some IMR4895. I also got a weaver base coming and have a variX II 2x7 Leupold standing by. I'm off work till after new years so it looks like i'll finally get this thing to the range this week. I got standard dies(not SB), gonna very carefully adjust my FL sizing dies and stay back from the max load(10% below max) to start with. This rifle is brand new....i'm not 100% sure it has ever been fired. The trigger has a long creep and it's a little heavy but i'm gonna put 100 rounds or so thru this rifle just to break it in. I'm hoping that puttin some time in adjusting the sizing die and staying back from the max load will make extraction work out like it should. More to come.....hopefully my next post will be a range report......Mike

well, tomorrow is the big day....finally gonna get to the range with this rifle. Made some loads yesterday....rem brass,WLR primer,150 grs bullets i pulled from some ammo that blew up my buddys 30-06, and 48 grs imr4895. It's funny,i need to put some rounds thru this rifle to break it in and it was made in 1966 ;D. I took off the metal butt plate and have a medium limbsaver on it to save the shoulder,it fits so tight to this monte-carlo stock that i have to work at it to get it on or off the stock. Got a weaver base, low rings, and a  Leupold varix II 2x7 scope so i'm sittin pretty good with sights. the trigger breaks at 5-5 1/2 lbs with a loooong creep, but i'm gonna try to learn to shoot it as is...maybe get a trigger job later if i need it. Hope to have a range report sunday.....Mike

went to the range with the gamemaster and the loads i put together with what i had around. Shot at 50 yds cuz i had three rifles to sight in and not much time. First round was left but on the paper, fired one more and it went same place...touching the first. I made four scope adjustments and fired two rounds each time.At each spot the two rounds were touching. Then i put four rounds into a one inch group. Thats 12 rounds single loaded but with no barrel cooling and it's still shootin an inch with a trigger that you really have to concentrate to shoot well.Real long creep and at least 6 lbs.....you think it's never gonna go off. I'm very impressed with this rifle, with a trigger job and some load development it will be a tack driver.....I wanna thank all you guys for helpin me out with your solid, friendly info
