stub projects...?
« on: December 15, 2009, 05:48:56 PM »
Hey guys, I have a question for those of you who have done or are doing stub projects with shotgun barrels.  I am interested in possibly tackling one with a machinist friend of mine.  However, I was wondering about the legality of cutting down a shotgun barrel to make the outside of the stub.  Is it okay for the average joe to do that, or do you have to get special permission from the feds?  We would like to do it, but I don't want to go to prison for my own ignorance.

Thanks for any info.

You're fine as long as you DON't attach the shortened stub on the gun without a barrel in it.

It used to be that you could be charged if you had a receiver on site that the stub could fit in. The Thompson Center case cleared that up.

What does stub mean?  I am trying to grasp it in my mind but really can't connect the dots?

See the stub info in the FAQs.

Thanks Tim.  I have been through the FAQ's many many times over, just never caught that subject.  Amazing!

What I do, before I cut the barrel under 18 inches, is to bore out the chamber end of the stub so that a round cannot be chambered and fired.  After the work on the stub is done, I cut it off from the barrel.  I take great care to never have a short shotgun barrel any place around me.  You will also find it is easier to do the work on the stub while it is attached to the barrel, it just machines much easier and is easier to handle than a short little stub.  Larry

I think you can rechamber a 7.62x39 for that one.
Hard to find but still cheaper than a stub.

kwells2006,I am not sure what you are asking, so   e-gunparts has a SMLE barrel for $21.40( part number 306890) I have bought two from them the bore on  one was terrible the one they sent as a replacement was very good. This is the barrel we used to make a 327 Federal Handi rifle.hth   Doug

Larry:
I have a question about your fear that the Feds will catch you with a shortened shotgun barrel. 1. Are you a FFL licensed holder?
2. If not how many times have you been raided by the Feds to check your stash of firearms. Wouldn't it be considered a work in progress?? I can understand if you had the stub mounted to an action with stock attached and you were in the field, but in your own work shop !!!!!

I have no FFL and am not a Gunsmith, I just do some hobby work from time to time.  I am exceptionally paranoid when it comes to anything to do with the Goverment, as you should be also.  It is easy to do the work in a sequence that precludes you haveing a short barrel which could chamber or fire a shotgun round, so that is the order in which I do things.  Larry
