Primers cratering on .204
« on: December 06, 2009, 07:44:54 PM »
Do any of you have any primers cratering on your HR NEF's?

I did't know what to think about it,  perhaps the firing pin hole was too large and caused it.
It shouldn't be pressure as I don't load hot I load for accuracy.

 Thanks,

Pack

I don't recollect anyone every having a problem, are you sure the frame you bought is an SB2? Sounds like it may be an SB1 or it has the wrong firing pin in it or was damaged when you had the problem with it, see the pics in the FAQs if you're not sure on the frame.

Tim

My .204 project is finally finished.

I have a BC that I sent in the reciever in and had a .203 barrel fitted to. It became awkward to change barrels, and like so many others decided to buy a reciever and fit the barrel to it. The barrel finally fit the used reciever with the shimming directions from Quick to do's site. I also had to shim the spacer. Now it shoots a 39 grain Sierra to about 1". It shot better before, but that is history. I am ok with the accuracy, as it is minute of coyote.
I had a few light hits which I have never had before, and I suspected that the firing pin was the culpert.
Being a used reciever, I don't know what the history is and what to do about it.
I had the reciever open today looking closley at it, and the pin stuck and wouldn't retrieve. I pushed it back with a screw driver.  It also would come out a short distance, but also would come out 2x the distance.
So I looked the FAQ's over and found nothing on firing pins.

Does the 204 use small rifle primers? The only time I've had pierced primers was from hot 22hornet reloads on an sb1 frame. :-\

The frame is definitly a SB2 according to the skeletonized frame in the end of the reciever.

The cratering is not piercing but just some back flow to cause the cratering effect.

Just thought someone may have had it also. in loading to and frorm the lands the pressure may increase as you go toward the lands. I may have to consider that.

 Thanks,

BB
