Quick thanks for everyones help
« on: December 14, 2009, 08:43:32 PM »
Everyone here was very welcoming and helped me make a decision regarding returning to shooting after many years.  I bored you all with talk of Handi's and 22 Hornets.

The outcome was the purchase of a Lyman Deerstalker lefty flintlock!  Quite a leap but logical.  Our gun laws require me to register myself with the government and that will take a long time, 3-4 months some say.

Well it turns out no regulations are applied to flintlock longuns.  I can easily buy in the US, your selection of everything is staggering to the rest of us.

My dream rifle remains a 22 Hornet but I couldn't find one so I'll wait until my paperwork is in order and I find a used one.  I almost bought a .223 but for my needs and purpose the Hornet in a lightweight Handi with iron sights works best.

Thanks

Hi Bob.  It might not be a bad idea to scout around for a Hornet while you're waiting for the paperwork to go through.  They don't come up that often.  Perhaps a seller may be willing to wait til it's done. You guys need to get people in office who will work to dump C68.  I wish I could help.

Pete

Welcome back to the world of shooting Bob.
I think you made two wise choices. The Deer Stalker is a fine rifle and the 22 Hornet is a superb cartridge. Pete gave good advice. Look now because they are hard to find. I'm still looking.

I'm glad you posted about the regulations in your country. It may give others a look through the window, at what could happen if we don't continue the fight for our gun rights.

In Virginia, we have an extremely strong gun lobby. We may buy and sell with no permits and private sales require no paper work.
We may carry a gun without a permit openly and concealed permits are shall issue.
We now have full preemption where local government may not interfere with the carry, sale or possession of firearms.

This didn't come easily. I've been involved in it for nearly 40 years and as a registered lobbyist, spend several thousand dollars a year of my own money in addition to money from the members of our organization, and hundreds of hours with our legislature.

This week I'll be meeting with members of the General Assembly and will continue to do so until spring. In a few weeks, we will have a lobby day where people from all over the state will converge on the Capitol to give the GA our message.

The reason for writing this is to stress that gun owners must work as a block. It's the massive effort in this state that makes it successful. Giving even a small amount of support to businesses and organizations like Paypal/.Ebay, just weakens the progress we've made.

I've watched the effort in your country to undo the restrictive laws and wish you the best of luck. It can be done but takes dedication and a resolve to never give an inch.

Good luck !

The thing I've noticed after being away for awhile from shooting is the way gun ownership laws steadily whittle away at the edges.

Handguns have been restricted for years but now there are even more onerous levels of restriction.  They can be restricted or prohibited depending on action type and barrel length.  To show how lame it is flintlock long-guns are exempt however flintlock pistols are restricted!  Can you imagine a criminal weilding a flintlock pistol!

I'm a vet of the Canadian Armed Forces, an Artilleryman, yet I can't own an Fn Fal to remember my military service days.  I loved my C1 service rifle and would like to have a surplus model as a collectable.  I was willing to carry it into mortal combat for my country and this is how I'm repaid.
