thinking about a 25/06 , is this a caliber that shoots pretty good right out of the box, or is it one you have to work with ?

If you want the highest chance of shooting out of the box buy a bolt gun.  Larry
A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

I don't take any rifle straight out of the box and shoot it..Never have..never will...I had a few real good ones..all I did was put a o-ring on mine..polished the bore a little bit as I do any rifle..shot sub moa...with factory ammo..Don't know how much better you could ask for..

The one I had and a few others on here would put two round very tight (3/4moa). After that I would have to let it cool or the groups would open up.
Very good deer rifle. Not the best for varmint/target work.

Mine is and Ultra,  I did nothing to it other than clean it and flitz the bore with a mop, after getting it on paper at 100yds, with Rem 115gr ammo, I shot some Hornady 117gr BTSP and Federal 115gr Nosler Partitions, both would put two close, sometimes almost touching, and the third would open the group up to an inch or so, it still does the same thing, I hunted with it this past season, never got to shoot anything with it tho.  :-\
