S&W model 63
« on: March 05, 2010, 11:33:45 AM »
I was in the gun shop today and picked up a model 63, stainless steel 5" new for $729. I was asking about the k22 when he showed me this and I loved the way it felt in my hand. I shot about 150 rounds through it since I got home and it is shooting about 2" groups at 30 yards off a rest.

Any thoughts on the 63 vs the k22 ? I am happy with it but wounderind if any body had both and prefers one over the other. The k22 i've onle seen on line or in a book, and he had this in the shop.

Like I said, it fit my hand really well and shooths great, smooth as glass.

I've never seen a K-22 in person, but I do like my 5" 63 quite well. I haven't gotten any really good groups like yours, but it sure is one of those 'just right' guns. I put a set of Pachmayr Grippers grips on it, the Hogues were too small for my tastes.

Pic's? Sure, I would be happy to. :)
Just a plinking group.

Both are great guns.  The 63 is handier to carry while the K22 has the weight to hold steadier.  Its a terrible choice to make but it has to be done.  I don't have to choose, I have both.

I'm trying to order one now through the gunshop. Their suppliers are all out at this time, so I have reservations on a 617 as soon as one is available.

One of the things about retirement is I now have enough money, because of my job plus retirement, to indulge myself in ways I couldn’t previously. I have gotten a Model 63-4 to go with my 4”, 5” and 6” 617s and my 6” 17. I enjoy they all.

NICE GUNS Tom ! ;)

I sure don't want to have to wait until I retire, Being self employed I'll likely be working until no longer able. :'(  But I'll spend it while I have it ifin I really want it ;D

And I REALLY want one or three..

Do you find that the cylinder on the 63 wants to start locking up after 200 rounds or so? Mine does every time, then I clean and oil it good and I'm good for another 200 or so, maybe it needs a little more breaking in.

The only thing holding you back on that 63 is likely the front sight. IIRC, they are all ramped, with red inserts. Switching that over to a black, patridge insert, will likely shrink your grips further. Heck, I think it's drilled and tapped for a scope, right? Try that, if you have a quality pistol scope. ;)

When I got my 63-4, I had the choice of an older 63 (4"), which had a red insert, or the new 63 (5"), which has a plain, black serrated ramp. I chose the new one. I have also ordered a new one (3") to go with my older one. It will have the illuminated HiViz front and a V notch rear. I will have to change them both out to black.
