.45-70 to .45-90 Handi Rechamber
« on: November 16, 2009, 03:40:19 PM »
Can .45-70 dies be used to reload .45-90 cartridges?  Track of the Wolf has .45-90 cases for 99 cents each.

Just unscrew them a bit further.  May or may not work depending on your press, how much extra die you have to work with.

I presume .45-70 ammo can still be fired in the .45-90.

I presume .45-70 ammo can still be fired in the .45-90.

They will! You'll lose a little accuracy because of the extra free bore, bt you may not even notice. The 90 is a good compromise IMO.

You'll find a lot more of the older target rifle in the 45/90.
Even at .99 each, I can't say I'm thrilled with the cost, but if they're decent cases, they should last the life of the rifle with modest loads/

The brass is Starline.  I think a box or two would last me a long time.

That's the one I thought you were talking about.  I live about 20 mins east of them.

What type of loads and FPS data are you getting with the 45-90 in the handi?  I have thought about doing this for some time now.

Can .45-70 dies be used to reload .45-90 cartridges?  Track of the Wolf has .45-90 cases for 99 cents each.

88¢ if you buy a box of 50 from TOW.  82¢ each if you buy 250 from Starline.

The .357 Max was so easy I'd really like to rechamber my .45-70 barrel to .45-90 now.

Id like to do the 2.4 length to get some more power from black powder, yet still only have .3" jump with a 45-70.  I really see no need for me to get more out of a 45-70 with smokeless because I dont load them up to 450 marlin levels.

IMO the .45-90 case is as big as you should go with smokeless powder and even it may be too big.  The .45-90 cases are pretty cheap compared to the .45-120.  I can still use my .45-70 dies and shoot .45-70 ammo in the barrel with good accuracy.

I agree but we've had this discussion here before. I like my 45/70's and 45/90 and don't like the 120.....but many here love the 120 and that's all that's important. If they like it, it's good for them.

Besides, I don't have any room to talk about overbore cartridges. I have a half dozen unfinished rimmed 50 BMG cases sitting beside the computer, that need to be blown out to .730  ;D
