New Buffalo Classic carbine in 45 colt!
« on: December 11, 2009, 03:20:05 PM »
This is my first post here. I have lurked for a bit and based on what I read bought a 45 colt carbine handi.

I want to put a peep sight on it. What is the appropriate front sight to fit in the dovetail and work with the Williams FP peep sight.  I have looked in the FAQ and cannot seem to find this piece of info.  The front sight is in a dove tail cut in the barrel and not on a screwed on ramp.

Thank you in advance for your help

Just a welcome here, still using as issued sights on mine, will have to put a scope on it to see how good she shoots.  DP

I bought the Williams WGRS for mine and the factory front sight was WAY too low. I ended up putting the factory sight back on but I plan on revisiting it at some point. MidwayUSA sells a .250" dovetail riser which would bring it up close to where it needs to be. Let us know what you end up with. You will love this little rifle. Try the Brownell's front sight height calculator which will tell you the overall height needed.

I haven't changed the sights on mine yet but plan to do the Willimas FP at some point because I really enjoy how well they work on my other projects. I would suggest that you actually try shooting the combo first before planing on switching out the front sight because it might just work as is. I have an FP on another rifle and didn't need to switch out the front sight because the FP had plenty of range in adjustment and everything is just fine. I didn't come up with the formula I am adding to this post but it works

1.Shoot a group (at least three shots) with the current front sight.  This can be done from any known distance.  Convert the range to inches. (i.e. 100 yards is 36X100 or 3600 inches)

2.Measure the distance the center of the group is from the desired point of impact in inches.

3.Measure the distance from the front sight to the rear sight in inches.  This is called the sight radius.

4.The change in height needed is calculated by multiplying the desired change from step 2 by the sight radius in step 3 and dividing by the range (in inches) that the group was fired at from step 1.

For example: Let's say our rifle shot 10 inches high at 100 yards and the sight radius of our rifle is 23 inches.  We can calculate the amount of change we need in the front sight as follows:[/b]

Change =  10 inches X 23 inches = .064 inches or about 1/16 of an inch. 3600 inches

Now to order a front sight the correct height, You measure the height of the front sight on your rifle from the bottom of the dovetail to the top of the sight, add the change calculated above and ask for that height.  Use a caliper or micrometer to measure with since you need to have an answer in thousands of an inch.

PS I didn't measure the dovetail on my rifle but I imagine it is a standard 3/8" dovetail (someone correct me if I'm wrong) which means you can easily find the correct height and if not get something oversized and file it to POA.

When I got my BC barrel I ordered a Wms rear and a .531 front sight from Midway, I think it may have been a Truglo product, whatever, it has a 3/32 fiber optic insert in the sight that really helps my old eyes. Midway had a butt load of sights from A-Z for width/ height. and insert/ball/bead choices. My front sight cost about $9 I think.

Thank you all for the great information.  The thing I need to know is what is the height of the rear sight aperture on the Williams FP sight above the rear barrel dia.  With that piece of information I can complete the calcs for the front sight height.  I did not see it on the williams websight. I saw the height listed for the WGRS sight but not the FP.

I don't have the math in front of me but I actually calculated it out a while back using the Brownell's sight height calculator. I came up with the 0.250" riser along with a 0.540" front dovetail sight should be the ticket for using the WGRS peep sight. I did this a while ago so calculate it yourself to check before you buy anything. Post the results when you get it all set up. I do remember that there was no way the factory front sight would work with the WGRS. I shot it and remember that I could barely get it on the paper.

I also forgot to mention simply building up the front sight and filling it to POA with something like Brownells Acker Glass died black and mixed with fine metal shavings. It gets incredibly strong when it dries and works pretty well. If you want to try a temporary setup just to determine height something as simple as a toothpick correctly sized can be temporarily glued to the top of the front post and filled to POA. Yah, it's cheesy but where only talking about a way to determine correct height before ordering a new sight.
