223NEF Load
« on: December 11, 2009, 04:05:25 AM »
Hey I'm new to loading for my NEf 223rem and wondering where is a good place to start.  It will be my coyote rifle with a 1:9 twist and from here I have no idea where to look for info.  I would lke to shoot the berger match grade in 50g+ but cannot find loading info on these.  If you have a load you think will work let me know.  Thanks alot.

Can't help mines 1-12. I just flipped through my books/data and Barnes is the only one that say's "1-9 or faster required to stabilize,,," some of their longer bullets. I'd think you'll be close if you use AR data with it's 1-7 ??
IMHO just because the 1-9 will stabilize longer heavier bullets don't mean it won't stabilize short light ones. Guess you'll just hafta experiment, that's the fun of hand loading  ;), someones pet load may not work as well in yours.
Pick a bullet and go for it, if I was you I'd start with one 50-55 grns. Kinda thought about a 1-9, I could shoot the big heavies and maybe try large game, but I have other guns for that and my gut tell's me to use something bigger anyways.

Mine likes a 69 grain Sierra Match King with a near max charge of Reloader 15.  It will shoot into less than an inch at 100 yd. consistently and I've gotten as good as 1/2 moa out of it before.

Kastles, would you do me a favor and measure the 50gr Berger? I'm curious if they will get close to the land's in my .223.

For Berger Bullet load data you can Email them and ask direct at bergerltd@aol.com. They have always been more than willing to help when I've asked.

I get excellent accuracy out of my .223 Ultra Varmint using 50 gr V-Maxes
over 23.8 grains of IMR 3031 with a 1:9 twist. Not the fastest at around
3200 fps but the coyotes out to 250 yds don't seem to realise it. ;D

I have had good luck with 55gr SP and a close to max of Win 748 in my old 1in12 (I still miss that one). My 1 in 9 seems to like a mid load of Varget and almost any 60is grain pill.
Have lights? Thank a Lineman!

Went to a christmas sale today and came out with a few goodies.  I picked up some IMR 4198, small rifle primers, Remington 223 brass, and two boxes of hornady V-Max 55 and 60 grain bullets.  And as soon as my dies arrive i can start playing with this stuff.  Thanks for all you inputs and I'll keep you posted about loads I find.  Another question I have is if it is ok to neck size my brass with a single shot handi-rifle?  I want to try this as i have ordered the die.  Also going to be looking for some Varget for the 60g V-Max's

My 1:9 bull barrel likes 27-28gr of H380 and CCI450 primers for 40 gr vmax, 55 gr varmit nightmare, and 70 gr Speers.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

I have an older barrel, so the lighter bullets get the nod for me. But I have yet to see a 223 that dosen't like a load of H322 powder and a 53Gr Match Sierra bullet sparked with a CCI BR primer!!
