My 32-20 gets new duds!
« on: November 26, 2009, 02:48:57 AM »
I have had this now for about 6 months and shot it enough to see its gonna be great. Its a stub barrel made for me buy one of our esteemed members here. BUT its not so fond of switching receivers. I mean previously it was sharing the 500S&W's receiver and WAS shooting about 1.5" @ 100yards. Then I switched back to my 500 barrel to test some new loads before switching back. Only to find my nice 1.5" groups where now @ 50 yards instead of 100 as before!!! Its time for its own receiver and set of stocks!!  SO, I have a SB1 with a 12Ga 3.5" chamber that I very rarely use, so seeing as the 32-20 is a lo pressure cartridge, its a fine candidate for this receiver.

It took me about 30 Min's to fit it to the barrel. Yes I modified the RECEIVER more than the barrel as I found the casting seemed small thru the barrel. The barrel would not close at all. This rec is a AX prefix, so it not that old. But after relieving the corners of the casting I was able to latch the barrel onto the receiver and from here on, I fit the barrel latch to the receiver as is normal for fitting a barrel. Now I have perfect fit all around the barrel, almost zero gap at the recoil plate. Now I fit the for-end to the barrel receiver. I shimmed the plastic block till I got the resistance I like to see. Now I need to go back and fill the gaps with colored epoxy. Because of the barrels design, I end up with the equivalent of a free floated barrel!! The butt stock needed nothing. I'm not so thrilled with the lack of a comb, but maybe a trip on Sunday to Cabelas will produce a neopreen comb kit like I have on my 30-30. Now for a trigger job. It was 8lbs when I started. After about an hour I was at a very clean 4lbs and I was happy. The stocks I choose are walnut off a BC handi. Of coarse it wears a Leupold VXII 2X7 scope in Leupold PRW LO-rings on a old style H&R base that was previously fit to this barrels radius. I also threw in a shot of hammer clearance. No alterations have been made to this hammer, other than adding the extension.

No hunting this AM, but I do hope to slip to the range for a couple shots as its on the way to the in-laws for turkey dinner!! I wanna hunt with this tomorrow!!! Here is some pics for you:

I just had to share!!

 Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

Looks good CW.
I put my 32-20 on a Pardner frame too. I had a set of wood stocks on it but switched out to a monte carlo synthetic set. It's a VERY light little rifle (5lbs.) and shoots great. I'm getting groups just a hair over and inch with handloads and 1.5 or so with factory.
I can't believe Remington won't factory chamber these things. The 32-20 is a natural for the Handi platform. :-\
Long story short... I love it and wouldn't part with it.

Well, looks like I outsmarted myself!!!  My trigger job resulted in a non firing handi!!! SO, I'm on Brownells ordering a couple hammers and related parts.  >:( >:(

Oh well, I am ordering extra pieces so I have them if this ever happens again!! I cannot seem to find this:  But don't find it or know the official name... (not the pin, thats a assembly slave pin, not part of a handi.)

It's a trigger extension, part #S01221, not available from H&R as it's one of the parts that need "fitting"! ::)

But Brownell's and Numrich sell it.  ;)

Hey CW that is one very nice looking Handi!

Do you know what happened to cause the gun not to fire?

I agree CW, that is a sweet looking little rifle, something that should be easy to carry all day if needed, congratulations on a fine job all around....<><....:)

The trigger releases the hammer before the trigger is far enough rearward to hold the disconnect up. CRAPPY design. I have figured out a way to work around it, but do not like altering safeties. I extended and reshaped the trigger extension, but its not reliable. Its a shame too, as the trigger is beautiful, breaking very cleanly at just under 4 pounds.

Thanks CW, that is a shame and I agree about the crappy design. I would much prefer to have a hammer with a half cock safety notch and NO transfer bar.

When you say the trigger isn't far enough rearward to hold the disconnect up, are you referring to the transfer bar?

I'm just trying to learn what happened so that hopefully I won't do the same thing.
Thank you very much CW!

GOOD SHOOTING!

Yea.
The hammer has a protrusion to push the transfer bar up, then after the trigger breaks the trigger extinction holds it up into position so the firing pin can strike the primer. O n mine, the sear/hammer breaks before the trigger is reward enough for the trigger extension to be able to hold the transfer bar up so the gun can fire. If I jerk the trigger, I would think it would fire.

I didn't even look at the handis today.. Some yard/garage/boat and jeep oil changes took up my entire day.  ::) ;D

I arrived home today to find a lovely little brick sized box on my door stoop from my good friends @ Brownells!!!

I ate dinner while the pics from my trail camera downloaded. I scooped up the box and headed to my loading room... ten minutes later I again have a wonderful, clean 3.5# trigger THAT WORKS!!!  ::) All I did this time was to lightly true and polish contact points of the shelf of the hammer and the tip and radius of the sear. I also got some very neat pics from the trail camera!! (see my thread over in outdoor cameras)

I will take it into the woods aft work tomorrow, IF the rain isn't cats and dogs as they forecast for tonight...
