11-87 slug barrel question???
« on: October 21, 2009, 06:07:07 PM »
I bought a 21 inch smooth bore slug barrel for my 11-87 12 ga. I tried shooting Federal buck shot through it. It shot fine, however the bolt would only come back about half way and wouldn't eject the fired shell. I had to eject them manually.

I guess these barrels are not equipped with the pressure compensation gas system. Does that mean that I can only fire slugs through it? Or is there some type of shot or buck shot that can be fired through it?

I'd like to be able to shoot some type of shot or buck shot through it.

Ya not trying to shoot 3" in a 2.75" barrel are ya? Other than that all I can think of is ya need to clean and properly lube it and try again.

My 11-87 is both 2 3/4" and 3".   The barrel is brand new.   The gun was cleaned and lubed as it alway's is.   I had no problem firing slugs through it.   The buck shot was about ten years old.   I don't know if that matters.   It was stored in my bedroom so it was in a warm dry place.

Beats me then but I think I'd blame it on the ammo and try some different ammo for it. Generally speaking buckshot is loaded pretty heavy so certainly should function it.

I shot some 2 3/4" Remington #4 buckshot in it today and it worked fine.   The other stuff might have been bad.   I've had it for 10 years or so.

We had similar problems with our 14" 11-87s purchased by our "lowest bid" HQ weanie at my state police agency.  As one of the Firearms Instructors, I checked with my gunsmith on them. His reply "Good luck on making them shoot !" The 11-87 will only function reliably with full power ammunition, especially the shorter barrel models.  We tried almost all the LE ammo on the market and none of the "reduced recoil" police loads cycled.  And it was a bitch to clean the barrels!  It took power tools to clean the crap out of the barrels. We found the Hornady 8 pellet OOBuck loads shot best in our guns, they aren't 3" shells, but worked well.  Good luck.
