barrel fitting
« on: December 15, 2009, 02:34:25 PM »
Hello everyone,
After reading the FAQs several times and a word of encouragement from Mac, I fitted my 35 Whelen barrel to a loose frame last night.  I used a piece of aluminum from a can for the shim and lo and behold, it fit well and locked-up tight. Being aluminum is a bit less strong than several other materials, I have decided that it is only a band-aid and will be sending off the barrel and frame to Wayne York for a professional fitting job.  I loaded 5 rds this morning and they all shot very well. This was the first time I shot a Whelen.  With a 200gr bullet going about 2400fps, I was a bit surprised.  I don't know why, I should have expected it to recoil a bit.  Anyways, I am hooked on the Whelen!!!!

I did not experience any FTFs either.  :)

On to my next project......hmmm, what will it be now??? ??? ::) Basement barrel stubbing without a drill press, lathe, or any other machinery? At least I have a 25ft Stanley tape measure to get it all measured.  ;D ;) :D

Happy Holidays!!

Fitting is pretty easy. All you need is a 4 inch C clamp, a 1 inch piece of 3/8th inch stock ( I used drill rod) Some good epoxie and some shim stock or a piece of a cheap feeler gauge set (what I used).  You use the clamp and the piece of drill rod to hold the shim in place while the epoxie cures. I don't know about using a piece of aluminum can but I bet it would last a long time. For epoxie some use JB weld, I used a product called "Quick Steel" I got from an auto supply store.

I didn't really trust the aluminum can either and went with the feeler gauge, just didn't think something you can crush on your forehead would be a good thing to hold a gun together  :D :D ;D
