Scope or iron sights?
« on: November 30, 2009, 05:04:00 PM »
I have 2 barrels for my rem 870 12ga a cantilever barrel rifled with a scope and a iron sight remington rifled barrel.  Both barrels shoot good am I better off with the scope or without for hunting in an area where shots will most likely be <75yds?

What power is your scope and what are you hunting?

Pick whatever you shoot the best with under hunting condition.

If your eyes are young and you can see the open sights well enough to shoot it  the non-scoped bbl will be a little nicer to carry and handle...no problems with lenses fogging or snow and rain covering the lens.

I would go with a variable low power scope like a 1.5-6 or 1.75-5 or even a fixed power 2x scope.  I have a 1.5-6x42 on my slug gun.  Most of my shots are 50 yds or less but I feel comfortable taking a shot out to 100yds, maybe a touch further.

What brand of low powered scope will hold up to a 12Gauge recoil?

a 2-7 leupold  has worked on several slug guns i have used and still using . At 75 yards in wooded areas or brush a scope is good to ID bucks when fading light makes it hard to see racks . ajustable power also helps at distance . The single plane of cross hairs is easier to get on target than a front and rear sight at distance where open sights are faster up close or on running deer .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Turned 40 recently and scoped out all my guns, (50 cal ML, pistol, waiting on shotgun mount,) that being said I just took a nice doe with iron sights on my 24inch rifled barrel Mossberg 500. I really like having the better target ID and light gathering of the scopes.

I got an old Weaver El Paso, think its a 1.5-4. Might try it. If it doesn't do it. I'll look for a Leupie. Thanks.

Funny, I was wondering if yours was a VX1 or VX2. Came back to ask and, hey, are you psychic?

I use two different slug barrels on my 11-87 12 ga.

One is a 21 inch smooth bore barrel with Williams Ghost Ring Fire Sights.   I use this set up when I'm going to be moving around or when hunting in thick brush/woods.   I shoot 3-4 inch groups at 50 yards with it with Remington Slugger foster style slugs.

The other is a 21 inch fully rifled barrel with the cantilever scope mount and a Leupold VX-II 2-7x33mm Shotgun Scope.   I use this set up when I'm going to be sitting or if my shots will be longer then 75 yards.   I shoot 3 inch groups with it at 100 yards with lightfield slugs.

I switch back and forth all the time.   Sometimes I'll bring both barrels with me and use the one that fits my situation best, leave the other one in the truck.

I use a bushnell 1.5-4.5 on one and a bsa red dot on the other two. The red dots work great when they are running!!!

I had one of each and left the VX-1 on a gun i traded . To be quite honest on the slug gun i really noticed no real difference other than cost.

I have a Mueller 2-7 on a 12 ga/.30-06 combo gun the scope has held up to 3 inch Brenneke slugs.  Here is a review http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,124129.0.html

I have a H&R Slug Hunter with a Nikon Slug Hunter Scope resting on top. This set-up is just great, especially for 150+ yards!

If I plan on hunting areas that would provide shots less than 150 yards, I go with my Benelli with an EOTech Holographic sight, with a Badger Rifled barrel. This set-up is for getting down to business, and taking whitetails.

Do you have a picture of the Benelli?  It sounds like a great setup for your 150 or less application..
thanks

dougk,

I let my buddy borrow my Benelli. As soon as I get it back, I will get a picture up. That is if he is willing to part with it, he has found great success with it this season!
