Spanish Civil Guard 308
« on: November 20, 2003, 10:11:19 AM »
I bought one of the first ones imported in about 1983.
problems were as follows:
1: Wrong headspace (Easily corrected)
2: Fragile front sight (Easily corrected)
3: Feed Problems (mag to chamber distance too far for .308.
original 7mm Mauser was a longer round so the .308
will miss the chamber and jam where the back/top
of the barrel touches the receiver. This problem was with
standard 147 grain .308 ball ammo. Reloading to a longer
overall length with 168 grain bullets will work to correct this.
4: "Sharp" firing pin would sometimes "Perforate" the primer
     with ugly results! (Easily corrected)

Good points!
 1: Very Handy powerful Rifle
 2: Mine is deadly accurate
3: mine is also in excellent condition

Note: I have heard the rumors about the action strength not being
enough for .308, but I have never heard of one failing.

S Summer,

I believe these rifles were pre 98.  If so, they do not have the third (safety) lug at the back of the bolt.  If the front two lugs let go - you eat the bolt.  I wouldn't cook any rounds - but, like you, I have never heard of an action not handling the pressure.
