Diddling this morning.
« on: November 20, 2009, 03:34:08 AM »
I've beeen sitting here diddling instead of deer hunting.  It drizzled most of the night and the fog is thick....still hasn't lifted at 9:30.  Just went out on the porch to see if there's any sign of clearing and the thought occurred to me.  If I can see only 75 yards, the deer can't see more either.  Soooo, the Handi .44 mag and I are off for a woods walk into the breeze.

See ya later.

Their hearing and sense of smell still got you beat by a long shot ;)

Not by a long shot.  Twice in my 50 years in the woods, I have collided....had physical contact with deer.  I've had them walk up to me and stare, wondering what I was.  I shot a doe one time I almost pushed the barrel against her ribs when I shot.  My next door neighbor had a 6 point stick his head in the blind window.  My beagles one time were running a bunny and spooked a nice buck.  I had to jump off the trail to get out of his way.  I always hunt into the wind and frequently take them by surprise.  I just read an article within the last week or so blowing their super senses to the wind.  They see better than we do at night, but not so in the daytime They have difficulty with backgrounds, colors and depth perception.  They pick up rapidly on motion.  Their hearing isn't much better than yours......I say yours and not mine cause everyone says my ears are painted on.  Make the wind work for you.  Use a grunt call to mask your crunching around, and many times you can take them by surprise.  That is still hunting, and that's what I love to do.

Petemi:  I agree, with a little wind I have walked right up on Mulies and Whitetail.  I've also heard them coming with my hearing device (I'm hard of hearing) and sat down and had them almost step on me.

Saw a young buck coming one morning, so I slipped into a brush cluster.  While I was there the buck came up and started cleaning his rack on brush.  As he came closer he started eying the bush I was hiding in.  He came up and lowered his head like he was going to charge the bush.  I yelled, he threw up his head, and I slapped him in the side of his head with an arrow.  Talk about one surprised little buck.

So when the wind is blowing might be a productive time to go for a walk.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
