MAX random stringing problem ??
« on: November 21, 2009, 02:51:56 PM »
I took my 357 Max Handi out today and got interesting results at 100 yards. An example (one of my actual 6 shot targets) would be 2 shots 3 inches high, 2 in the bullseye and 2 3 inches low. The windage was within an inch of centerline for all 6 shots but the elevation was 3 inches from center for a 6 inch spread. The shots fell randomly, not in order like you might expect for a barrel heating up. Could this be the shelf/latch relationship causing the problem? I didn't think to briskly close the action after each loading and was actually weak in that regard as I was not taking the rifle off of the rest to close it. Any other ideas?

Welcome to the break action rifle world.  This is one of the problems with this type of action, when you can get it to lock up exactly the same way every time then the problem will be much less.  Some get it fixed easily and some never do.  Larry

Vertical stringing with most firearms is almost always forearm issues. As Larry mentioned, it could also be so with a handi but a inconsistent latch engagement can also cause this...  As you mention, consistent firmly snapping the barrel closed and holding the trigger after firing are two things that can really change things for the better in a handi.

Read thru the FAQ's on accuracy.

As others have said..yes it could be a latch problem..since it's radom..it could also be a light primer strike by not pulling all the way thru with the trigger..or a combination of other things as well..
