Throat on ultra varmint 204?
« on: November 14, 2009, 02:09:06 PM »
I should wait till I shoot my new 204 ultra varmint before asking questions ;D but I read to much. I have read that a lot of these rifles have long throats and you can't get a bullet close to the lands. I saw where Berger has some 50 and 55 grain bullets. I would think they would be very long and could be seated close to the lands, giving better groups. Has anyone tried this or am I just dreaming. Thanks, Don

I have the NEF Ultra in 204 and I load to 2.323" OAL and am about .030 off of the lands from what I can tell.

Check out the FAQ's and make yourself a gauge...

You'll be doing good to get the 1:12" twist of the 204 H&R to stabilize 45gr bullets, some have had trouble with 40gr, do yourself a favor and forget about loading to the lands, load to recommended COL and work your magic with the load.  ;)

What Tim said. You should not have any trouble with the 32 or 34gr they work very well in mine out to 300-350yrds leave the 50 55grainers to the 22's. Kurt

You might notice, if you look at the Berger Bullet website link, the recommended twist rate for the 50gr. bullet is 1:9 and the 55gr. bullet 1:8. Best to heed Quickdtoo's advice and stay 40gr. and below and keep your COL as listed in your reloading manuals.

My .204 loves the 32gr v-max but keyholes the 40gr anything.  32s will do anything you want to do with this caliber.

Thanks, I got 500 34 grain varmint nightmare bullets so I'll see what happens. Thanks again, Don.
