What cal. and bbl length for hogs.
« on: November 05, 2009, 03:03:10 PM »
I want to use my Contender for hog hunting.
What cal. and bbl length should I use?
I hand load so I need ideas on a good "hog" bullet also.
All shots will be inside 100yds, most inside 50yds.
I have scopes in 2X, 3X, 1.5x4, 2x7, and 3x6.
All help appreciated.

.357 mag, .357 Max., .44 mag, 45LC, 30/30, 300Whisper, 7TCU all in a  10" barrel.  All of these will take a hog inside 100 yds.
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

I went through the same thought process last summer for a hog hunt down in South Carolina.  I picked from my collection the three I thought most appropriate and did a poll here on GBO.  My three picks were 10" 357Max, 14" 375Win and 14" 45-70.  Knowing most of the contributors around here for awhile, I figured the 45-70 would win out with the Max a close second.  Surprise!!!......375Winnie won out hands down and acually was the one I wanted too.  Shootin' the 220gr Hornady SP.
Now at this point I'd love to tell you how it laid those Carolina hogs low.....but...alas.......it didn't get a shot.  Next time I go I'll probably give it another chance.

I hunt in the Low Country of SC and middle Ga for deer and hogs.
I have been using a Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70.
I will try the T/C in 44mag and 357max.
thanks for the help.

I like the .45 Colt, with a 300 grain bullet, out of a 10" barrel.  Super 14 in .30-30 would also be a good choice.

Must my 2 cents worth.

I have used a .357 magnum 10" barrel with Buffalo Bore 180grn SW gascheck. This particular cartridge has killed
a number of south Alabama hogs. I use iron sights. I also use a Marlin 1894CSS in .357 magnum with 158grn jsp
Buffaloe Bore, Skinner peep sight.
