Topper 30-30 Scores Again
« on: November 09, 2009, 04:09:23 PM »
This 10 point whitetail was taken Saturday Nov 7th in northern "Manysodas" with another Topper that I pieced together with a barrel bought here on GBO with a frame I had and a synthetic buttstock and black painted forend from Numrich. One shot @ 95 yards with a 130 grain Barnes X bullet and a healthy load of W748 and R-P case using an R-P 9 1/2M primer.

Congrats! Did you recover the bullet? Where was the bullet placed? Just curious.

Bullet was not recovered. The shot went through the heart and broke a rib before exiting. I have shot many whitetails with the Barnes X bullet and have not recovered a single one as of yet.

Way to go!  The Handi Rifle strikes again, and that is a good report, and don't feel bad I didn't recover my bullets either  ::)

Nice shooting!  Nice deer!  I really like reading about the many successes of the 30-30 Handi rifles that have been recently reported.

Yes, we hunted in area 107 near Orr.  Did you kill any deer and what size bucks did you see? I am assuming you were hunting Minnesota, right?

hunted near McGregor in area 156. We saw 3 bucks early. one was a huge bodied 8, followed right behind by a young wide 8. saw a young 6 chasing a doe, and my buddy saw a another small 8 with a deformed right side. another large 8pt on sunday morning. I never had a chance at a deer , but who cares. It was a great time anyway.

That is a great deer!!  I was about to trade my Topper off but I think you inspired me!

Good to hear that you were inspired. Why were you contemplating sending the Topper down the road?
If you still feel that way later, let me know, as we'll give it a real good home here if we can work out a deal.

Congrats. It looks like you made a perfect shot.

It was easy as the Topper did all the work. I did a little trigger work on the frame and also floated the narrow forend that goes with the slimmer profile barrel. Those X bullets seem to really work well in the shallow rifling of the Topper and Handi.

I was thinking of selling it and getting a newer SB2 frame.  However, after shooting my rifle I have decided it just doesn't get much better than this.  Its very accurate and just plain fun to shoot.

Not to mention over a pound lighter than the Handi NEF. Those Toppers are just plain fun like you indicated. The most fun you can have without laughing. Do you handload for yours?

I handloaded in the past, but I don't anymore.  I gave my equipment away last year to someone who would really use.
