What is the difference between.

Wanting to buy mod.700 in 243 hopefully to build a long range rifle one day.? is are there any difference in a VLS,SPS,CDLAND SO ON as far as the quality of the action.THANKS

No not really. Other than the metal used in them and length of course all the M700 actions are the same and that can also be said basically of the Model Seven tho it is a bit shorter than the short action M700s otherwise same. They are the most used action for custom rifles of all the options.

But get one of the varmint versions with heavy barrel and chances are it will be about as accurate from the factory as it would be as a full on custom rifle.

Thanks Graybeard for the info. but that's what i am asking is one mod. made out of better metal than the other and if so what mod. would be the best.Also would a older version be better say 70's-80's i really don't know if some years were better than others.THANKS

I've only had one custom 700 built so I;m no expert, nor am I a gunsmith - but here is what my smith requested when I wanted to build a 280 Ackley.  He wanted the oldest 700 action I had.  He said something about the seating of the bolt and lugs would be better.  We lapped the bolt anyway but I suppose after a 1000 or so rounds, if anything is going to move ever so slightly, if will have already moved.

I wouldn't put a lot of stock into this theory, nevertheless, the rifle turned out well.  It is now about a nine pound, blueprinted, safe queen.

I build rifles for a living. The 700 is the action of choice. I would rather build on a new action than a old one! With cnc machining, spc, and the new tooling the actions today are far better than yester year!

It is good to hear that from someone that actually works with the new stuff.  We hear so many times how Remington's quality has gone down the tubes.  I've bought Remington 700's my whole adult life.  Only have 6 now and one Model 7, but they are all good.  The last one I bought was the best one I've bought.  The one before that the next best.

The .243 is a great LR round for targets while still having enough energy to be able to take deer-sized game out to around 500yds with the right bullet.  The only problem with the factory tubes on most rifles is that the twist rates are usually 1:9 or higher, mandating the use of lighter bullets.  Get a 1:7.5 - 1:8 twist barrel and shoot the heavies and it will out perform the .308 balistically at long range, especially after about 500yds.

I was about a moment away from rebarreling my 5R to .243 when at the last moment I went with a .260 instead.
