firing pin hitting high on used bbl
« on: November 03, 2009, 05:51:03 PM »
I just bought my first used bbl, a 270.  I have a 22 hornet, 30 30 and 20g that all have been factory fitted. Installed the 270 on my frame and checked it with a 2 thou. feeler gauge, it closed on it with a good amount of  friction pull to get it out.  Fired cases look like proper headspace in that the primer wasn't flattened or backed out. How do I check HS properly, with a go/no go gauge?  The problem is that the firing pin strikes high  at 12 o'clock on the primer.  Is this an indication that something is not fitted correctly?  If I had to describe it I would say the pin strikes about two-thirds of the way up on the primer.   Can you explain?

Thanks,
Redrider.

Off center pin strikes are very common, don't worry about it as long as they fire, I have several H&Rs that have very off center pin strikes and they shoot excellent.  The easiest way to check the chamber itself is to drop a factory round in the chamber(remove the ejector first if it's not an extractor) it should be flush with the chamber face, not recessed, any recess adds to headspace, it doesn't take too much to cause misfires if firing pin travel is minimal.

You should have .040"-.060" pin exposure after dropping the hammer slowly while holding the trigger back to keep the transfer bar up, measure it with the tail of your caliper.
