Muleskinner,

CCI 200s work the best in my 7-30 Super 14 barrel with a number of different loads.  Currently, W748 is the powder I use my hunting loads though IMR 4064 is very tempting with 139 Hornady SSTs as it yields higher velocities though at the expense of some accuracy in my barrel.

When I experimented with CCI magnum primers, I found that the accuracy suffered some.   Regardless of the load I've tried, it seemed that standard CCI 200s burned all the W748 in a 14 inch barrel.

Gramps has given good, safe advice on proceeding with magnum primers.

Merry Christmas!

Gramps gives good advice.  Always err on the side of caution.

ShootinStr8, Ive had just the opposite results regaurding 748 and CCI250s.  Accuracy and velocity consistency improved with the mag primers in 2 of my barrels.  All barrels aren't the same and therefore have their own preferences.  Part of the fun is figurin out what works best in each one.

Also can't do any good with Winchester primers in some of my loads, and I may never understand why.

Merry Christmas!

Old Syko,

Yea, I'll too will never understand why barrels of the same chambering, same length, same material and same manufacturer perfer different components. It's wierd.  PJ's old 7-30 barrel, for example, prefered IMR4064 and didn't like W748 which mine loves.  I too haven't had much luck with Winchester primers but there sure are enough folks out there that love them.

Thanks for the comments about the CCI250s.  It will encourage me to keep trying them.   In fact, I haven't tried them with IMR 4064 so maybe they will be the ticket.  I really like the increased velocity 4064 offers over W748.

Merry Christmas!

Magnum primers with W748

definitely tighten the groups in my 7-30 barrel, but IMR4064 will cut the groups in half again compared to any formulation using W748 in the same barrel.  I put 2 lbs of W748 thru my barrel before I gave on it.  4064 is the only way to go with this particular barrel and I have a nice 7 pointer that wishes I would have stuck with the 748!
