Handi-rifle .357 Mag.
« on: September 17, 2009, 05:04:11 AM »
It appears that H&R has added the .357 Mag. chambering (model SBI-535) to their line of handi-rifles. I haven't been able able to find one on dealer racks. I'm new to H&R products and I'm wondering if anyone knows from experience just how easy or difficult it might be to obtain a new H&R product.

The model number is SB1-S35 with an S, not 535, best advice is just keep looking, you'll find one as soon as they make some more, have your dealer place an order with his distributor.

I bought a 45 Colt Carbine a couple weeks ago and the dealer had a new .357 on the rack. If you have trouble finding one PM me and I'll get you his info, he could probably ship it to a local FFL for you.

I'm gonna do like Tim says, I'll see about putting one on order at Bass Pro.
I'll let you know what they say.

Bass Pro said they are not in stock at their distributor, no back ordering possible.
'Keep calling'.

But...I ck'd the NEF site - .357 available w/ no sites, scope rail only!  That seems silly, why not in lightweight, open sites model?

And... you cannot order other rifled barrels on it, only extra shotgun barrels can be fitted!

Not very imaginative on NEF's part.  I don't think I want a no-sites version.

Tim (or anyone else who may know....but Tim being the only guy on the face of the planet who knows each NEF or H&R personally)..... :) is it possible to take the 357 and have it re-chambered to a 357 Maximum?

Thanks

Dave

H&R dropped the sights on several barrels, they only offer slick barrels in those chamberings, the 357mag and 44mag both only come with scope rails and on SB1 frames, it's been that way since early 2008, they'll also fit those two accessory barrels to your 1987 or later SB1 frame.

Sure Dave, many, many here have done theirs to max themselves, I just did my second one yesterday, piece of cake, takes about 15 minutes IF you take your time and clean the chips out frequently, there's a link in the FAQs on how to, reamer can be rented for less than $50 including shipping it back, or you can buy a reamer as Larry suggested, then sell it.  ;)

Dave it is possible and many have been doing it for awhile.  Im about to have mine reamed soon also.  Much has been covered on this in the FAQS.  Its easy to search using the "Ctrl +f" while in the faqs and typing 357maxium.  A DYI hoto thread is in there too.

I love my .357s and the one I reamed to max about 6 years ago is one of my favorites. Did it myself took about ten minutes.

Check with your local pawn shops and see if they can order you a .357 my local pawn shop does almost all of my gun buisness now I hardly ever go to a real gun store. I tell him what I want and he finds it, Or if I find it he will order it for me. I am lucky thou he only charges me 15 bucks for transfer fee.

I'm, unfortunately, too old for open sights.  I put a red dot scope on the factory base, had it reamed to .357 maximum and put it on a SB2 frame.  Now I smile alot.  I'm pretty sure my second .357 Handi is gonna get a haircut to 16 1/2 inches, a synthetic youth stock and reamed to Maximum.  A couple of neighbors were here a few minutes ago looking at the .445 Super and the .357 Max.  I talked with them about the future modifications to the .357 Magnum, saying it would be a great truck gun.  They said "Yeah, it'd be a great violatin' gun".  I don't wanna know about what my Yooper neighbors are doing. ::) ::) (Yooper is a native of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan).

I don't think I want a no-sites version.

Try the Red Dot on it, I think you'll like it more than open sights.  It works real well in dark woods and from dusk to dark.  Both eyes open, target acquisition is faster than open sights.  You never loose your target, and there's nothing to line up.  Where the dot is in your field of view is where the bullet goes.

Thanks Pete,  I just might. Red Dot or a compact 2.5 or so...that would be something good.   I can't see that great anymore myself.  But I sure like the idea of open sights on a short/medium range round like the .357, for backup in case of scope failure if nothing else.

One way the 'slick' barrel is better - if you choose to shorten it you don't worry about reattaching the front sights!
And I agree, it would be very nice (and lighter) w/ a shorter barrel, 16.5 to 18 or so.
What I'd REALLY like, is to find an older H&R Topper in .357.

I now own an H&R .357 Handi-rifle thanks to the tip by Doublebass 73. Don't have it in my hands just yet. I'll mount a spare leupold 1-4X scope on it and use it to expend several thousand rounds of dated .38 SPL street loads that have accumulated over the last three decades. I recently joined an outdoor gun club just three miles from my house. The range is only 50 yards but I can practice various field shooting positions. It's the range of the Freeport Police department, located in an industrial section of Long Island NY and is a model of police/sportsman cooperation for a common interest.

GunBroker has a SB2 .357 MAG / .30-06 Springfield set in very good shape.  I talked with the dealer that has it for sale.  I came very close to buying this Handi rifle but I grabbed eskimo36's  .357 MAX barrel instead.  By the way, the Max barrel locked up just right on a new frame but was sloppy on my Hornet frame.

So, you can now order a .357 magnum barrel to be fitted to a SB-1 frame?  Is that correct?
