« on: October 17, 2009, 02:46:37 PM »
I have heard several accounts of people buying 35 whelen handis here is Ms.  I was told NEF built around 200 complete rifles and sold them to 1 dealer in Brandon Ms.  Any truth to this??
As for me, I will take my 45\70 anyday!!!

Yup, look for the 35 Whelen threads a few pages back, 200 of em sold in well under a month, they should be making some more next year.

Larry, that's the old RMEF Whelen (and AFAIK, there is no better H&R rifle in .35 Whelen). 7-8 years ago, I think you could pick them up cheap. Now they cause bidding wars.

I agree on the great old RMEF .35 Whelen. I have a RMEF .35 Whelen barrel fitted to a frame and it's great. Of course I am partial to .35's, as my .35 Remington H&R/NEF will attest to....<><....:)

Bass Pro in
denver still has 1.  $350.  The rifling is worn smooth (????), there a few nicks, and the safety feature that keeps you from opening the action while cokced (every gun in the store is cocked and y ou can't uncock with a trigger lock) is broken.  It does have rings.  Wish they would let it out on "trial", I am afraid of the rifling being shot out.  It is unusual to see a hard kicker shot out.  The price for a shot out barrel is way out of line.

The barrel may be leaded up from shooting soft cast bullets toooooooo fast ! It would take a tremendous amount of copper jacketed bullets to shoot out a 35 cal barrel. Check it out  it might just need a lot of cleaning

Being able to really check it out is the problem.  The sales guys say it looks a little odd to them also, the gunsmith already passed it as OK and seems to have no interest in a lower priced gun.  If they would "rent" it or something, I wou ld look harder.  There still is fixing the opening lever problem, it may be a bent tab inside, or it could be a broken piece to replace.  What burns me is that the gunsmith is supposed to check for any safety issues.
