45/70 hands down.
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

Depends on the load in the 45-70.  It can be mild to wild.  I normally shoot 300-350 gr'ers at mid trap door level and would say they recoil very little more than my Encore 308(don't have an '06) with 150-165 bullets. 8)

I have always wanted an Encore or Contender pistol and I already have rifles in 45-70. I didn't even think of the 308, I already have two rifles in that caliber too.  I have shot a Contender in 30-30 and found it far more pleasant than any 357 or 44 mag that I have ever fired. Any recoil comparisons between the 30-30 Contender and say an Encore in 308.

The 44 is just not Pleasant IMHO
But If your thinking of a contender and have shot the 30-30 I think you'd be very happy with the
7-30 waters not a 308, But a Nice round and very Stout kicking like a 44 mag
They're are many on this board with the 7-30
I hope they chime in along with others about the 308 in which I never fired
But really like my 7-30 waters
Good luck

The 30-06 from a 15" pistol is nasty, I can't even imagine the 45-70. Remingtons "Managed Recoil" ammo makes the 30-06 a pleasure to shoot. What will a brake or porting do for the 45-70? will it tame it down to comfortable?

I have both a S-16 unbraked 45-70 barrel and a S-14 braked(Hunter)barrel.  The brake reduces the vertical muzzle jump by a large margin.  I think it INcreases the force directed straight back into the palm of my hand.  And...it is LOUD.  In all my Contender barrels it is the only brake I have and I have often thought about trying to trade it for a unbraked S-14 barrel. :o Walt

I bought a 12 inch 45-70 pistol barrel about six months ago.  I too was concerned with the recoil when I bought it.  I'd say that it's just something you have to try and see what you get.

Prior to buying it, I talked to a lot of guys on this site about the caliber as a pistol.  Most of them told me that they can only shoot about 10 or 20 rounds from theirs before they have to put it away.  Some also told me to shoot it at the end of the day rather than when you first start shooting for the day.  (seemed good advice)

Well, when I finally got mine and took it to the range, I tried reloads with 300 grain bullets and 410 grainers.  All were high end loads for trap door rifles which is the limit to what T/C recommends for the T/C or G2 frame.  The first round I fired from mine, I gripped it hard and nearly ground my teeth with hesitation and BANG!!!  Hey, that wasn't that bad!

Long story short:  I took mine out prairie dog shooting this summer.  One morning (note, morning and first gun shot for the day) I took mine out and played around with it taking pot shots at some dogs around 70 to 100 yards.  I managed to hit a few all the way out to 100 yards with open sights.  After I got done plinking around with it and taking a few serious shots at the dogs, I had realized that I went through 75 rounds.  Plus, I fired about 50 more later in the day aside from shooting my other stuff.  So, all in all, it's not THAT bad.  Yes, my hand had a little "ringing" to it after shooting the 75 rounds in a row but it didn't hurt or stop me from shooting more.  Basically, if you can shoot a big bore (.44 or .45 Colt) single action revolver for an extended period of time and have a lot of experience shooting one, then the T/C pistol in 45-70 wont give you any surprise.  In fact, you'll enjoy it.  I love mine!

By the way, my barrel does have a factory muzzle brake on it.  Also, I have a 30-30 T/C barrel with a scope on it.  If I didn't have the scope on my 30-30 barrel, I'd say that the recoil of the 45-70 is only slightly more than the 30-30, if any.  Other note, I wear gloves when I shoot my T/C's.  They help a lot and I can literally shoot my 30-30 all day long.

I have an encore in 308 with a  15" barrel. Recoil is not bad at all. Never shot a 45-70, would like to get one but it will not be a handgun.
If your wanting to hunt with it 308 is a good round.

Years ago, I shot the 45-70 in the 12 inch non ported barrel.
This was a friends gun, I just bought my own TC just recently.
Anyways,I was very used to his 44 mag and 223.
We were working at an indoor gun range @ the time. TC nut came in one night all excited about his new 45-70 and took a box of ammo off the shelf.
Into the rifle range we had and we heard two big bangs.
He handed the hand cannon to a co worker and two shells and said, "try it"
Now Coworker already had a Smith 44 and we were always were dreaming up,loading up hotter and hotter shells.
"No prob " he sez and closed the door. One big whoomp noise and he staggers out. Blood running from a split on his forehead.
He hands me the cannon as he heads to the restroom.
By now everyone is laughing. You know the saying" Its all fun till someone gets hurt, then its hilarious" ;D
Its now MY turn,, Im thinking" Face, dont get in the way!" ::)
Now, Im in the closed room, hand cannon in hand and insert the howitzer shell into the breach.
Standing up, sort of aim it down range. Good firm two hand grip, face out of the way and squeezed the bang lever.
It feels like Hank Arron just took a full swing against my hands with his base ball bat !
The cannon recoiled well past my right ear!
Im Done!
Call me a puss if you want, but Im never shooting anything like that again.
Takes a bigger man then I am to want to sling a chunk of lead that big down range and call it " Fun".
Good luck with that. :o

I have a 14" Contender barrel with the factory muzzle tamer that is not bad at all to shoot with 300 grain loads.  If the weather holds tomorrow and the cows are not grazing the 100 yard range set up in the pasture draw, I may be able to tell you about 15"ers in the 30-06 and 45-70 w/o brakes out of an Encore.  I have had both barrels for a while and not had time to go shoot.  Hopefully they won't both be for sale tomorrow afternoon. . . .  ;)

I shoot a G2 with a 12" factory ported barrel in 45/70 with 300 grain factory rounds, the recoil is no worse than full power 44 mag handloads. Recoil is not as sharp to me as  the 44 mag. I can't imagine the 45/70 out of the heavier Encore being bad at all.

To me, the 45-70 is a heavy, stout push where a 44Mag has a sharp, quick snap!

150-165 grain 30-06 rounds have a nice recoil. Id compare it to a hot 44mag from a S/W 629.

IF anyone has these two calibers in a T/C handgun, which recoils worse?

I have shot both and the 45-70 does have more felt recoil. The 45-70 is from a Super 16 Contender barrel unported and the 30-06 is from a 15" factory Encore unported. Again I would say the 45-70 has more.

I have a 30-06 Encore 15" factory barrel set up with a Nikon scope, Warne rings and base, and I'm shooting Winchester Power Max 150 grain bullets. I'll have to say that the recoil is really all in all not that bad... you have to hold on to it mind you, but I don't leave the range sore or bleeding or anything like that. Matter-a-fact I usually leave smiling because it shoots so well.

I have a 12" encore pistol barrel, It kicks like a mule. I have not shot an encore in 30/06,
but know someone who owns one. He says that " it don't kick at all".I would say that
the 45-70 ,12" , non-ported , pacmayer(?) gripped encore kicks more than my old
480 ruger SRH.. mc
