.308 problems again.
« on: October 31, 2008, 03:11:09 PM »
Hey all I went out shoot my .308 win again.  Still not shooting under 3inch group with 3 shoots.  I am really getting upset.  I tried factory Federal ammo same thing.  My .204 shoots .300 inch at 100 yards with same receiver.

I am sorry and I don't have an answer, BUT I do have a solution. Sell it to me, CHEAP, as a defective barrel that won't shoot straight. I do want a .308 H&R/NEF barrel.

I read one of your previous posts.  Is this the same scope that was on Point of Aim and then a few inches high?

I just about came unglued with a 308 Remington that would not group.  It was my second rifle and I had a Leupold VX-2 on it.  Always a 3-4 inch group and nothing would be consistent.  The Point of Impact was all over.  To the left, to the right, wandering.

Scope mounts changed, ammo changed, etc.  But I just ASSUMED that the Leupold scope was in good condition.  It tracked correctly.  Clicking up, down, left, right.......what's to know.

Turned out that all of the crap and approximately 60 rounds of Federal, 80 rounds of Remington UMC, 20 rounds of ADI surplus were all in vain.  The erector system insided the scope was broken.  It still tracked, it was still in focus.......but it was moving thousandths of an inch at a time.

Point is that you need to remove the scope and put a spare or a loaner or a cheapo on it to test it.  It sounds like you have tried remounting the scope rail.  Take the rail back off, take the rings off.  Put electrical tape between the rings and the scope (or address labels, whatever, just something to increase friction), try a new scope.

is it heavy barrel or standard?  shouldnt be shooting that bad.  if everything locks up tight on the gun then it only leaves a few other options.  i swabbed mine with mother's polish when i first got it.  shot 15 rounds of federal 168 gr match ammo and 1/2" groups at my homemade range.  i shot of a back pack i use for my sniper gear at work.  leaves an even amount of pressure on the front stock.  also have my front stock torqued down to 30 in/lbs.  what bullet weight are you using?  i have seen bullets shoot like crap then found the perfect round that brought things together.  i would say if you have mounted and remounted everything and problem still exists then i might be the scope.  i have a cheap bushnell 3200 2x7x32 on mine and it shoots great.

i found your first post and my suggestion would be to use a torque wrench to torque everything down nice and even.  i used 16 in/lbs on all the scope ring screws per leupold website and used 25 in/lbs on the scope base screws.  that might help as well.

i shot of a back pack i use for my sniper gear at work.

will if your shooting in the 3's with your 204 i don't think its you or your shooting set up but thanks anyway joe.

lets face it man sometimes these gun just don't want to shoot, but if you feel like the work you just about always can get them to shoot MOA.

try checking the crown , the littlest thing wrong can screw you.

make sure your barrel isn't touching your forend .

try swaping scope with the one on your 204 or any other proven scope you have.

and last but not least recheck everything , rings, bases, lock up everything . go old school and read the FAQ's and do everything they say. and if that don't work sell it to andy. :P
curiosity killed the cat , but i was lead suspect for a while

well whatever the problem is it's consistent with every third shot being the flyer.  strange how it puts first two together and third is farther away.

by any chance are you flinching?    the .308 may not be a hard kicker; but it is a lot tougher than a .204 i'm sure.

are you resting the rifle on the wooden forearm just ahead of the frame(where the forearm is flat and can ride the bag smoothly)?    if you've got the standard-issue forearm like i've got on my .223's (wooden with schnabel-type forearm i think they call it) then you'll have trouble with many rifles having that irregular forearm shape if you don't place it properly on the bag.

make sense?

Well I put my .204 scope on .308 barrel just to see if it was scope.   >:( Lets just say it not the scope.  Still getting two really nice shoots then a flier.  Using a really nice rest and put forend on same spot every time.  This is really starting to mess with my head.  Only thing I can think is that my barrel might not be broken in yet.  Another question what strength loads are you shooting.  I am about 2 to 3 grains below max.  I know this gun can shoot better just try to get it there.

Read and follow all of the info in the Handi Basics 101 sticky. Try shooting it without the forend on with the forward rest under the front of the frame and make sure the latch and shelf are clean and dry, since you worked on the scope mounting, those are pretty much all that's left.

When you remounted the base, did you clean the mount holes out so you could see shiny metal at the bottom of the holes? The factory fills the holes with thread locker and the screws can bottom out on the hardened thread locker before it's tight when remounting if it's not cleaned out properly, see the FAQs info on mounted the base.

Take two aspirin and make another range trip to let us know how it worked out!! ;)
