If you want the very best, then a custom made Stainless Steel Rod made by Denny Phillips, at Ivy Rods is the answer. Denny makes them to your exact dimensions, or he will give you excellent suggestions and advice if you're not sure what you want. I just received an Ivy Rod for my .22LRs from Denny, and it is a work of art.

Here's a link to Ivy Rod's website:

I also have Tipton and Bore Tech rods, and they are OK, but eventually I'll have an Ivy Rod for every caliber I'm cleaning

I wouldn't recommend a rod for the 17hmr, they're just too wimpy and flex too much IMO which isn't good for the throat, I use a Patchworm, they also make one for multiple cailbers which I carry in my fanny pack, but for the 45-70, you won't find a better one-piece rod than the Tipton carbon fiber which is my favorite, they do offer one for the .17-.20 but I've never used it, can't say if it's stiffer than my stainless .17 rod or not, but if it isn't, I wouldn't use it, they sell for $25-$30, do an internet search to find the best prices.  ;)

+1 for the Tipton carbon fiber. That is what I use for my sniper rifle.

For the .17's--.20cal. I use a Pro-Shot 1 Piece stainless steel cleaning rod with a bore guide. ;)  This works very well but i would not do it without the bore guide....

Edit:
The bore guide  keeps the slovents and oil out of the lock shelf and centers the cleaning rod in the chamber. 8)

The H&R rod guides don't have the O-ring as depicted in the pic at Sinclair, the one shown is for their bolt guns, the H&R looks similar to the TC rod guides, just a bit longer, I have two of the H&Rs and one for my Tikka, they're listed in the FAQs here, unfortunately they don't make one for the .17hmr either.  :-\

EDIT: I updated the FAQs thread, the Sinclair site was updated when Brownell's bought them, I corrected the link to the bore guides and posted pics.  ;)

Bore-Tech from GBO Sponsor Midsouth Shooter's Supply. I used to use Dewey until I discovered Bore Tech. I use four different size rods for bores of .171" to .458" and have no problems with flex so long as you use the right size for the bore and don't try to force a patch/tip way too large/tight for the bore. Always use a rod guide as well and ya can't damage anything.

Like the guys already wrote, there is no such thing as a "good" rod that will do all those calibers. You need caliber spec rod if you really want good stuff.  Besides, the 17 needs to be specific as its brushes and tips are thread specific. Then if you had to have as few rods as possible, maybe 22/24 could be combines and 25/27 etc you get the idea.  IMHO, your best bet is buy the best you can afford, specifically for the caliber you need to clean.

I guess I will give Bore-Tech a whirl. I have a Tipton for my 17 HMR and a Dewey for my 224 caliber stuff (by far the most). I also use bore guides + I have a cradle to hold the rifle and I use my off hand to keep the rod from bowing in the middle if it is a hard push.

+1 Tipton although I've never used one as small as .17.

I long ago gave up on Tipton as junk when Midway used to sell them as a house brand. Everyone I bought broke with very little pressure on them. I've tossed them all far away and will never allow another in my house.

I have nothing but the Dewey and Bore Tech rods these days and am slowly replacing the Dewey's with Bore Tech as budget allows.

I am a little different than mose as I mainly use a Bore Snake for most of my cleaning unless something is leaded badly, then I will use a rod.
