Scope or Base help..110 Savage
« on: August 30, 2009, 03:36:23 AM »
Rifle was too good a deal to pass up.  I am a small guy 5' 8" i have very short arms...I got a 7mm mag Savage 110.  Stock is really not too long its just that I cannot find  a scope that will come far enough back so I can get a good look through it...Should I find a scope that can be mounted where I can bring it back to my eye, or should I cut down the stock?

I enjoy painting stocks, but I have never done anything like cutting or grinding on one...

One more thing, I have a Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20 X 50MM AO that I would like to put on it...But the scope is very short on the areas that you can put the rings on....and will not go back far enough where I can see through it...

Mw,
I have the same problem. You could cut the stock or have it cut down but I solved it by getting a front base that is "extended". An example I found at Midways is "Weaver Top-Mount Extension Scope Base #402 SilverProduct #: 522204" though they should be available at your favorite firearms emporium.

One other option, more pricey, is to go with a longer eye relief scope.

I have a savage model 111 in the 7mm-mag and mounted a millet TRS-scope(4x16-50) with 30mm high rings and base from dead nutz. The scope is great and the rings work really well. You can get both for about $400 and there is alot of room to slide the scope back and forth for eye relief.

If you're set back that far on the stock, then it really is too long for you.  I would cut it to fit, rather than buying mounts or a scope to correct the problem in the wrong way.  Unless of course you plan to sell the rifle (I just never sell any  ;D), then you might not want to cut the stock.

Either the stock fits you or it doesn't. If the stock does not fit, you should trim it. Even if the stock fits or you trim it to fit, you may have to move the scope back. If you are having trouble getting the scope back far enough and it is very possible, get yourself a 1 piece weaver style mount. One that has extra slots so you can move the scope back. You may still may have to use an extended ring on the back or front or both to get it far enough back to see out of comfortably. I have a WTC mounted on a short action and I had to move the front mount back a good 1 1/2" from the front slot. The front mount is over the opening for the cases to eject out of. The WTC is short between the lens bells so you have keep the rings fairly close together. Just one other thing, be careful about getting it too far back, the 7mm mag has a little shove to it so it can ring your eye if you are not careful. Good Luck to you and Good Shooting

Here is some one piece mounts for a round top 110 receiver. They can be a flat top receiver, depending on the year of manufacture.

mw,

A few years ago, I bought a Savage in 270 Win for my Son-in-Law, who at the time was on a military deployment. He's shorter than you with a relatively short arm reach. When I received the rifle, I quickly realized the issue you're facing. Even though I am taller than my Son-in-Law, I had trouble getting a mount and scope with enough eye relief to suit me. Trust me, I checked numerous options for about a month straight. I finally arrived at a solution with which my Son-in-Law is extremely pleased. It works for him, even with his bulky hunting clothes on.

I had the stock cut (LOP reduced by 1" including a Sims Recoil Pad installed). I installed a Warne 1-piece tactical base ("0" MOA) and mounted a Leupold 6 x 36 scope, which has a little over 4" of eye relief. I had initially used the Warne QD rings with the levers but I noticed that accuracy started to deteriorate the more I shot the rifle. Thinking that the rings were the culprit, I then installed the TPS Product tactical rings (TSR steel rings), which are mil-spec picatinny (as is the Warne tactical base). Presto, this rifle is now a tack driver with just about anything I feed it. When recently testing 7 boxes of different factory ammo (I obviously do not reload for the 270 Win), 6 out of the 7 factory offerings were very accurate at 100 yards.

A few things to note about my arrangement of which you should be aware: 1) At that time all Warne had available in 1-pc tactical base for the Savage LA was blued steel. Since the rifle is SS, there is a definite contrast, which we both like. This may not apply to you but I thought I'd mention it; 2) My SIL's Savage has a detachable magazine. So, the 1-pc base does not pose any loading/unloading hassles; and, 3) I bought the Leupold scope before I decided on the mount. I'm fairly sure that I'm not restricted solely to long eye relief scopes for this rifle but I really have not tried such a scope. So, I can't say for sure.

The above set-up is what worked for me and my SIL, after much research and experimentation. It may or may not work for you. I just wanted to give you my $.02 worth. Good luck.

If everyone in this world all had the same opinions it would be a very dull world, but my opinion would be to get rid of the simmons and get a little something better. I know to each his own and I am happy it is but I would want a scope that was designed to be a scope not a paper weight. Simmons has a great air rifle accuracy but don't get a Gammo air rifle it has to much kick for a simmons and it will always need re zeroing.
