Let me hear your opinions on which one.  625(45acp) or 610 (10mm/40)?

I am an absolute fan of the 625 series of S&W revolvers. Here is my favorite:

I have two 625's (a 625-8 Jerry Miculek Special 4" and the pictured revolver a 625-6). I have Red Dots on both and seem to be able to shoot either equally well. A few days ago I shot my personal best with the 625-6 (personal best target of all time):

This was shot standing at 25 yards on the pictured NRA Slow Fire Target. The load was a target load (4.5 grs of P5066 and a 200 gr SWC H&G #68 cast bullet, with Fed 150 LP primers and Starline .45 Auto Rim cases).

These are amongst the easiest revolvers to load accurate loads in my experience.

So, I vote 625's..

no  experience with either  so  i probly  ought not   post   but

45  is  the classic
45ar  is an  option,,,,,,
45  is bigger   not  sure which  has  most  power
625  has been around a long time for a reason

610........might  want to get one  while you can....they come and go
10mm  might  shoot flatter
40cal  will kick less

both  large frame
i think  the  625  is better
i think  the 610  will  apreciate in value and  is unigue

all  my  big smiths  are  629s.......44mag

Flip a coin.
Both are great.
If you want to use it for hunting.
I would go with the 610 in 10mm for hunting and use 40 S&W for target.
I just got a 1917 Colt.  Fun.
There is also the 627's in 357 or 38 Super.

Since I am a fan of the M25-2, I would fall on the side of the 45 ACP.  So I guess the 625 would be my choice, although I do not see the need for the heavy barrel for the ACP cartridgge.

I had a 625 slicked up for bowling pin competition. Very nice.

.45 makes a bigger hole ;D

Either would do well for deer hunting...nice .45 SWC weighing 250 to 265 grns moving at about 950 fps will do well for any critter my side of the Mississippi out as far as I care to shoot (50 to 70 yards) with open sights.

The 10 uses lighter bullets, but they are not as big around so I would still expect to get good penitration with the lighter pills (smaller diameter = less resistance).

I guess that it might depend upon which ever is easier for you to get components for.

One thing to consider though..If for some reason you don't want to shoot with moon clips (maybe to shoot in the I.D.P.A. SSR division for example) you can shoot the 625 with AR brass (I get mine from Starline) and speedloaders.

I shoot my 625 four inch a lot. loading or buying 45acp is cheap. You will need lots of clips. Half moon clips really suck, avoid them. The 45 also has the auto-rim option if you reload. If this is to be a 'business' gun, definately the 45.

One less expensive (and yet more practical) option would be to pick your favorite revolver and have it modified to accept moon clips.  This can be done for about $100.

I took a favorite .357 and hand it modified to be my EDC gun.

My 686+ (-4)was born as a 6” barrel, but I had it shortened to 3 ¾”, ball detent moved to the crane, front sight replaced with a 14 ct gold dot, cylinder machined to accept moon clips and oversized cylinder release as the frosting on the cake.

I can shoot .38/.357s in a moon clip, but I also have the option of ignoreing the moon clip conversion and just loading it like a conventional revolver.  The beauty of using a rimmed cartridge is that you don't loose the ability to load, fire, and eject without the moon clip (just like the Good Lord intended handguns to do)!

Now it is my favorite carry piece with #358429 SWC (173 grain) over 13.5 grns of 2400 powder.  In the woods, in the town, around the homestead and on the road…this gun/load combo always makes me feel like I have the equipment to handle just about anything.

Hmm, Very interesting!  :) :-\   I never thought of that.  That's a nice gun.

627 8x .357 (comes from the factory ready for moon clips) It'll shoot .38spl 148gr soupcans crimped flush all the way to hot .357 magnums.

or 686+ 7x .357 (seen a lot of these converted. I think S&W made a few?)

I purchase all of my moon clip supplies (and have work done) at http://www.moonclips.com/

He is a great guy to work with as well as a very skilled machinest.

I am having another 686-4 converted to .41 Spl by Hamilton Bowen.  After the gun is converted, I am sending the cylinder and a few brass to Moonclips.com.  He is going to machine out the cylinder for me and make special moon clips for the L frame .41 spl.

Check out his sight...his work and products are reasonably priced and top notch!

I've been getting all my moon clip stuff from him for over 6 years now.

I'm with Dale53 on the 625. You have the option of .45ACP and moon clips or .45AR. Personally I shoot a lot more AR in mine.

I have  a 4" pre model 29 in the shop right now being fitted and retimed with a new cylinder. I bulged the old one, a stupid mistake with a progressive reloader.  18 grains of Unique, as near as I can tell, will ruin a cylinder.  Anyway, it is being cur for moon clips.  I will use this gun as a carry piece most of the time.  I can shoot the 240-250 Keith style bullets reasonably fast if I keep the speed down around 1200 feet per second or less, and 180 grain hollow points are a max load proposition.  Either one will do for deer, bear, or two legged varmints.  A 180 XTp is a little shy on penetration for a bear or a hog, but I have lived this long without being attacked by a bear.  As for hogs, I am a meat hunter, not a trophy hunter, so twelve inches or so of penetration is fine as long as it shreds the lungs.

I plan to put an oversize thumb latch on my gun, and that's about it.  I will probably use Lyman Devastaors as a one load does it all for this gun if I can get it to shoot them well. Reminds me, I need to order one of those molds.I want to have plenty on hand when the gun gets out of the shop.
