Idiots in action
« on: July 21, 2009, 06:16:09 AM »
I guess the world is just loaded with them (youtube sure is).  When something goes bad wrong, it is kind of like the bug man spraying for roaches, 10 more are back to replace them the next day...

He seems to be using oxy-acetelene, which is a powerful explosive mix.  If you are determined to use mixed gases for propellant, look into oxy-propane.  The reason I mention it is that the Army wanted machine gun and tank gun simulators which ran off gas, and they bought them in the 1960's.  Those all used oxy-propane, I think because oxy-acetelene is too dangerous.

Anyway, watch what a balloon-sized bag of oxy-acetelene does and hopefully take away a lesson:

(stands up in front of the group)  Hello, my name is Joe and I'm a Stupid Experimenter With Explosives addict.  In my teens I too tried playing iwth O2 & C2H2.  I used bread bags.  I filled one with nothing but O2, and not much happened, the match flared, and the bag burned with some vigor.  Next I filled one with nothing but C2H2.  And it flamed impressivly when I touched the match, on the end of a 6 foot stick, to it.  Made a light "whump" sound, but not much more than that.

Thus emboldened, I ran the pressure down on the O2 to the same as the C2H2 and filled a bag with a mix of roughly equal parts of both gases.  As soon as the match touched the bag, a concussion wave hit me and the flash singed my eyebrows above my glasses, and my hair, and I was enveloped in a haze of smoke and dust.  Ears ringing and in a slightly dazed condition I realized that what I had just done was Not Smart.
