Recoil pad for a Buffalo Classic Carbine 45 Colt...
« on: July 07, 2009, 01:58:46 PM »
After some fiddling around I've finally got my carbine shooting well. So naturally I'm loading up some "warmer" loads that are hard to handle in a Blackhawk (325 gr. lead T/C and a "pinch" of H110). The recoil for a few shots to get the load sighted in tends to soften up the old shoulder...OK, it hurts after 5 rounds.

So I'm thinking a slip on recoil pad would be helpful except the butt stock is cupped. So this creates a void between the butt and the pad. Over time I suppose my leather pad would conform to the butt. Then it is no longer useful on my field shotguns since their butts are flat.

Any creative solutions out there that I haven't thought of?  I don't think I want to cut the stock and put a pad on it. I might consider getting a spare stock and putting a pad on it, but would like to keep the original look of the carbine after target practice with hotter loads.

I use a small Galco on my BC stocks, works fine.  ;) Also have one with a Limbsaver fitted.

You could try carving some rubber to make an insert to fill in the curve of the buttplate so the slip on pad would not distort- Pete

I picked up a Limbsaver slip on from Walmart for $19.95.  I just put it on over top of whatever is on the end of the stock & it really takes a bite out of recoil.  I only use it for bench work, load work-up, & sight in &  it doesn't seem to matter that it doesn't fit perfectly.  Recoil doesn't bother me when I'm hunting.  After all - that's only one shot  ;)  ::)  Jim

Slip-ons slip unless the fit is excellent. I shoot 12 gauge slugs with a Tamer stock. Found that a PAST -shoulder pad and gloves are better than a recoil pad for range work. Guy(competitive shooter) that I bought it from claimed that he got a recoil coach who trained him to handle the recoil without a pad Guess that is an option for some guys.....lol

Don't bother on the Limbsaver slip-on if that's the only use you have for it, the small fits too loose on the BC stock, it's work for range work if you take time to make sure it's on the stock properly, but mine wouldn't stay on for field use, when mounting the gun it would flop over to one side if I wasn't careful.  :-\

I had the same problem, switched that barrel to another frame and put my Hornet barrel on that frame.  Saw a nice looking stock on a 410 at Shiptons that looked alot like the 45's stock but with recoil pad mounted.  Might see what is available from Remington for stocks, it had good looking wood and checkering on the grip.  DP

The TDC is a nice alternative if you want another checkered walnut stock, it has a low comb for iron sight use, but will work with a scope too.

Tim, please be kind enough to explain what a TDC is and where one might get one. Is it just a stock or the whole gun?

TDC = Topper Deluxe Classic, it's sold as a complete shotgun, but the stock set is available from H&R just as any stock set is, pending inventory status of course.  ;) The part numbers are listed in the FAQs on the Retail parts page.
