New-to-me 38-55 Target Classic
« on: July 08, 2009, 06:20:30 AM »
Aginst my better judgement and without Kathie's knowledge I bought a 38-55 TC off the forum.  All I really wanted was the pretty case colored action for my 45-120 and that sleek stock for my 45/70.   ;D

The 45-120 barrel locks up fine on the action so now all I have to do is give the rifle some personal finishing touches and she'll be just how I want her!   ;D

The TC stock looks great on my old 45-70 Handi and after I mount the sight set I got from a member here it will be my handy "pop gun" 45-70; shooting loads with 300 gr. bullets @ around 1300-1500 fps.   :)

The TC forend is a little long for that concept however...  :-\   I think I'd trade it for the shorter one like the one on the 45 Colt BC.  Should the opportunity arise and if I could match the color that is!   ;)

I'll also still look for a 30-30 barrel for the pop gun.  Don't know why,  :-\  just because I guess.   :-[  I've already got a .410 barrel for it and a 3 barrel set sounds kinda coolly utilitarian!   ;D

Don't know what I'm gonna do about the 38-55 barrel yet...  :-\  It looks great, the sights are neat and it shoots well if the targets the former owner sent me are any measure.  But I just can't get excited...  :(  Now don't get me wrong, I like the cartridge.  When I was a kid I reconed that the 38-55 had to be just about the best cartridge there was for huntin east of the big muddy...  But I always thought I'd get one in a lever gun.  :-\

I slugged the bore when I got the rifle and it came out at exactly .380.  I've got some new brass but no dies, bullets, etc. for it ...  What to do, what to do...  :-\ :-\ :-\

I've got an extra 38-55 barrel for my BC/TC combo.  Unfortunately, the barrel is a little loose on both frames I have (W&H BC/TC and H&R CR-45) so I'm probably going to sell or trade it.   I considered the 405 re-bore as Tim suggested (if it locked up right) being that I've already got a 38-55 barrel.  The 405 would be a lot of fun!  However, if I only had one 38-55 barrel, I'd probably keep it a 38-55 and shoot it.  It's really a fun caliber to play with.  Before you consider doing so and spend a bunch of money on brass, bullets, dies, etc, you might do a chamber cast to make sure you don't have one of those overbored/underchambered barrels.  If it's one of those, I'd consider it a 405 Winchester.

AtlLaw, I guess that makes two of us that don't know what to do with an extra 38-55 barrel.  :)

Even the overbore/tight chamber necked 38-55s can shoot good with the right combination, neck reaming and sized right cast bullets. Mine has a .379" bore, shoots 220gr jacketed bullets at 2375fps using 375Win data in Starline long brass, 330gr .380" gas checks at ~1800fps, shoot it, have fun, then decide.  ;)
