375 H&H
« on: July 04, 2009, 04:10:59 PM »
I bought an RCBS full size die set. Loading reloader 15 and Speer 270 grain BTSP. There is no crimp groove, does it need to be crimped or just set for proper OAL? Sorry, probably posted this under the wrong forum....sorry. ::)

Hi Ole,

Unless the mfr of the bullet advises against it, I'd crimp.  I do in my gun with no problem.

I don't Crimp bullets for my 375 H&H. They fit very snug. I could crimp them But never had any problem.

Speer has long recommended not to crimp bullets which do not have crimping grooves....which is the vast majority of Speer's rifle offerings.  As long as the neck tension is high enough to prevent bullet movement in the magazine there is no need.

Thanks for the info folks. I had read about not crimping if there was no groove but I could'nt remember. i am going to load 68 grains of RL-15 behind the Speer BTSP and magun primers. i will measure and seat to proper depth. Thanks. ;D

If loading for a single shot, you don't need to crimp.

If loading for a magazine rifle, fill the magazine up and shoot all except the round that was in the bottom of the magazine.  If the bullet wasn't pushed further into the case with recoil, you don't need to crimp; if it was pushed in, then you do.

If you are going to crimp a bullet with no cannelure you can use the Lee Factory Crimp Die with no problem.

I bought one of those LEE factory crimp tools for the 375H&H and I love it. No more crushed cases! :)

Or you could just polish down the expander plug from your dies? Just be sure you can still seat a bullet, maybe leave the very top alone(minutely belling the case mouth), to ensure bullet loading?
