Darn: Went out to the river bed where I shoot at long distances yesterday. The Alaska Machine Gunners were setting up there. The only place in the Fairbanks area they feel they can safely shoot at 1000 yards or more. Seems one of their members while flying along the river had seen someone out there shooting at long ranges. Reported it to other members and they drove out and checked it out. Found it to be perfect for their purpose. Now, half the people in Fairbanks knows about it. Aggggggggggggggggggg!
They had a big meet out there yesterday where they showed off their machine guns, light artillery, and all kinds of fully automatic weapons. They even had explosives where they were blowing up things. No drift log was safe.
It's 1000 yards from the end of one of the breakwater dikes, to a bank along the high water mark. 750 yards from the dike to a small stand of brush in front of another bank. 480 yards to a sand bank along a dry feeder slough. There is no water any where along the bullet paths. It is a very good location for shooting at long ranges. I have been using this location for the last five years, and have not seen more than 10 people out there. They were just curious about what was out at the end of the dike.
Doubt I will be alone from now on. Will wait and see. My fear now is that the 4-wheelers will think it is a good location for running their rigs in the soft sand and river silt. Could be hazardous if they are out there in a low spot, then someone came up and started shooting without checking to see if anyone was out there. I always check since I drive my Sammi, or snow machine out there to set up my targets. I never left any target stands out there, since i did not want anyone knowing I was shooting out there. Wonder how badly they trashed the area.
