got it
« on: June 27, 2009, 07:25:54 AM »
Just got mod. 16 weather warrior in .308 cal.  Put on my scope but have not had a chance to shoot the gun yet. If It's anything like the old 110 I used to have it will be a tack driver. Accutrigger looks good and the Accustock seems to be well thought out. I don't hand load now so does anyone have a suggestion for a good factory deer load for this gun? Shots past 250 yds. will be very rare.

Hefty  Some of my best factory loads for the 308 were Hornady 165 gr sst Also used the 150 gr sst. Both were very good and produced excellent groups at 100 yds. Before I would go out and buy a bunch of the above mentioned, I would try some of the less expensive Rem core lokts in 150 and/or 180 gr. Both of these Remington shoot very well out of my Handi rifle. The 110 rifle that I have {30 06] loves to shoot my reloads with those Hornady 165 gr sst. Try to find what your rifle likes best. They are a little like a woman. You just have to find out what pleases her best, then stick with it.
                          Good shooting my friend.

Thanks Jim for your reply....My Savage 110 was also in 30.06 and at the time I owned it I also handloaded.
I got used to having tiny groups at 100 yards at the range...That was 30 years ago. Since that  time I have
hunted with many different rifles but nothing ever got close to the accuracy I got with the Savage. Now I guess I've come full circle and I am shooting a Savage once again. Though I don't  shoot enough these days to warrant handloading....I still want an accurate gun/cartridge combo. I have some Winchester XP3s
in 150 grain also some Federals with barnes bullets. I'm going to buy some Rem. Federal and Winchester rounds in the less expensive versions to do a little shooting with. I can't afford to plink with XP3s.
Good luck with your shooting!

I have a Savage 116 in .30-06, that is 13 years old, and that thing loves 150 gr. Nosler BT's. Next it shoots 150 Remington Cor-locts. I don't handload either, but those are the mose accurate two rounds I have shot from it. I have tried the blue box Federals, and can't hit any thing with them. Ok, I can hit with them, but they do not group well at all.
