I got to thinking again.
« on: July 02, 2009, 01:45:44 PM »
:-\ I got to thinking again and that is always BAD NEWS :-\
I just purchased a new barrel that I intend to use first for a Bear hunt
and with what it is will probably be my all around barrel.
As I said I was looking for a barrel to use for Bear and had planed to use open sites but this is not the best way to go on it because of its versatility.
I have never liked the idea of a see threw type ring but may be a way to go with a hand gun ??? since a cheek welt is not an issue like a rifle.
I would have to think this has been done before and any input would be nice.
Thanks
Mike

Two problems with the peek thru rings for a pistol:
  • It raises the scope further above the barrel
  • Most all the peek through rings I have seen are real junk

Thanks Keith and the # 1 reason is why I did not care for them on a rifle.
#2 reason is a problem >:(

Is there a problem if the scope is higher on a handgun since you use a EER
scope with them anyway?

My guess is that it makes more difference the longer range you plan to shoot the pistol.  I have never used high rings on a pistol so I am only guessing.  The peek through rings are a train wreck on a rifle, but may be ok on a pistol.

Also consider how much the iron sights are restricted by the rings.  It really cuts into the field of view IMO, and could make finding the target hard.

Consider a red dot, or a no power shotgun scope instead of the high rings if that would work for your situation.

I once shot a deer at under 3 yards with a 4X scope, so it may really be a non-issue for you.  The high rings also put more strain on themselves especially with a big scope and/or heavy recoiling cartridge.  I use medium rings on my Contenders so I can grab the hammer without an extension, but no higher.

The trajectory difference is the same with a handgun as it is with a rifle.  The type of scope doesn't matter.  It is a non-issue for game hunting.

I have two Super 16 barrels rigged with see-thru rings.  A 22lr and a 22Mag.  The factory iron sights are just barely visible above the base(they are useable but just barely.  The objective lens of the scope must be fairly small or it will get in the way.  Having the scope mounted higher is not an issue shooting from handgun position.  I would be afraid of it with a recoiling caliber(much more torque transfered to the scope with being so far from the barrel.

Think a 375JDJ would have to much torque ::)
Guess it was not such a good idea :-\
Thanks everyone.

Don't forget, Dennis and I both know where you live.   :o   IOW, forget cheaping up that barrel with junk rings and use the ones that came with it.  ;)   This wil be your top dog barrel, now and always, so lets start off right by giving it the respect that it deserves pard.    :P ;D  8)

Best scope that I ever found for my four 375JDJ barrels was the Tasco Pro Class 1.5-4X.   They took thousands of rounds of 270 & 300 grain full house loads and never missed a beat.   Hard scopes to find now, and with their 30mm tube won't work with your T'SOB rings anyway (which should be your first choice in rings for that barrel).  Next best was the also discontinued Simmons Gold Medal 2-7.    And the old model Burris pistol scopes were better made than they are today, so they stood up well.   A 1" tube 1-4 powered scope will cover all your bases.   The 1 or 1.5 is as good or better than open sights for close work... and 4X is more than enough power for farther than you'll ever shoot it.    But one note to remember before you buy anything... with that full length vent rib no scope with a large objective bell is going to work using the T'SOB rings.   The bell won't clear the rib as the rings are not high enough.   Dennis had a Leupold 2X on it probably for that same reason.    You might check into the Bushnell Elite 3200 2-6X32.   Never owned one buy heard lots of good things about them.   It'll probably clear the rib (measure to be sure).   Few scopes are going to stand up to the barrel, so choose wisely instead of wasting your money on cheap.

OK, do we have you broke yet?    ;D ;D ;D
