Old book about Artillery online, but in French
« on: June 24, 2009, 01:12:22 PM »
However, there's some weird, wild stuff pictured.  Book written in 1898 and now in poor condition thus poor graphics.  I skimmed thru the pictures and saw some interesting stuff.   The graphics which began as line drawings are OK, only cartoons and halftones are poor.  The author loved bar charts.

Since it is in French, Seacoast will probably like it.

The artillery stuff begins on pp. 98.

Zut alors!   Cannonmn,  hey, give me a break; that was 40 years ago when I read  From the Earth to the Moon  by Jules Verne.  With two or three word look-ups per page, it took awhile, but was worthwhile.  A great story, it is!  The page 98 hint is very important as there is not much of interest prior to that.  I don't think I'm going to lose much sleep if I can't find a cheap copy.  Not inexpensive, Cheap!

Thanks for posting.

Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

From the poem  Screw-Guns  by Rudyard Kipling

Yes, THANKS for posting it.

I know only a few words of pseudo-french, but the pictures/illustrations were good.

I just click on the blue url and it opens right up.  Try copying the url and pasting in the address line of your browser.  Then if that fails, find googlebooks and search for "La Guerre" by Jean de Bloch.  If none of that works you will have to move to another country to the south of where you are now.
