UAW on strike
« on: June 24, 2009, 05:16:36 AM »
UAW workers are on strike at Bell Helicopter in Ft. Worth TX
don't know why, someone told me they wanted a raise.
I wanted to stop when i saw them walking the picket line and ask
if they had talked to their brothers at GM in Arlington,TX. but
thought better of it.
Another union is picketing Sunland Corp. down the road from where i work
they are putting in a pipe line and not signed a contract with the union.
I don't know what the answer is but i am glad my co. is able to keep the
employees we have and think the employees are happy to have a job.

Well, why not? They've got a government gravy train that solves their automotive problems forever. They may as well be chiseling for more more more in other industries.

Don't they know there are a lot of other talented people looking for jobs out there? We had a local company put the screws to their union, they had replacements, temporary housing, and training facilties all in place prior to the vote and they made it known. They ratified the contract which was a step back for the union workers.

I am a union worker....UAW to be specific, but our work is not in the automobile sector, our is the DOT sector. While I do not agree with alot of what happens within the unions. One thing that many have to consider is that the wages paid to union workers are the wages that help set the standard pay for many non-union jobs. Case in point, union wages in our area are 22.00 per hour for certified welders and are universal for the most part UAW ,iron workers, and pipefitters. most of the non union jobs around here, pay wages that are close to but not equal to that, remember that companies have two type of costumers, internal and external. Internal are the employees and external are the buyers. upset either of these and a company is doomed. Keep both happy and life is good.

Are there abuses within union? Of course, everyone has heard of employees that abuse the system and aren't worth keeping but can't get rid of them, but that happens everywhere to. Within a union everyone for the most part is the same, doesn't matter how much pucker power in southern regions you have because when it comes down to it, it won't matter. What you will find is that someone will file a grievence against you. Most only want to do their jobs and receive a fair wage for it.

My dad was a longshoreman (ILWU) until the /union/ tried to have him killed for running for a union office. I recall working at the port and spending most of my time sitting, waiting for the crane operator to swing around and pick up the pallet we hand loaded with coffee beans, and thinking the shippers were going to find a way around paying union wages for feather bedders. I also remember arguing with my father that intentionally breaking open boxes and taking goods was going to result in the shippers finding a way around the ports.

He said they could not because of the contracts. Well, the contracts were with the shipping companies, not the shippers, and the shippers are free to find a cheaper way. They did, by going to containers. That also hurt the truckers because it led to faster turn around picking up and dropping loads.

The ILWU and Teamsters are big unions, and corrupt, and encourage stupid greed. Looks like UAW is not any better at stupid greed.
