My message is getting out :)
« on: June 26, 2009, 03:05:14 PM »
If you  google "Washington Navy Yard Cannon" you will see my "message" comes up in four of the ten hits on the first page.  The top two places are descriptions of two of my you-tube videos, and further down the page are two links to NSSA discussions I've posted on the same topic.

I wonder why Graybeard Blackpowder board isn't picked up by Google?  If it were I'd dang near have the whole first page of Gooble covered, for that search anyway.

If you search Washington Navy Yard Leutze Park, and probably a few other phrases like that, you'll see my stuff too.

Just think in the old days I would have had to pay quite a bit for that much advertising.

I'm hoping it won't take the Navy too awfully much longer to figure out they have a problem they shouldn't keep ignoring.

I'm not so sure. As Will Rogers used to say, "I only know what I read in the papers". Seems to me they might have other things on their collective minds; e.g. a North Korean ship loaded with toys and some heavy stuff pointed toward Hawaii? They may get to the cannon problem a little later; like after the shooting war is over?  I sure wish the conservation issue was a priority.  :-\

Y'know Richard, it isn't like they even have to DO anything, I've offered twice now, in writing, to get them help to fix the problem, all they have to do is ACCEPT the help.  Simply saying "yes" isn't that difficult.  They have their own charitable organization that can accept any amount of help or donations, all they have to do is allow that organization to accept help, and they haven't done that yet.

Not fixing it themselves is understandable given they have other things to do and not enough money to do them all.

But refusing to allow anyone else to fix the problem is unacceptable at least in my own way of thinking as a taxpayer and, as an American citizen who, like you, is part-owner of those cannons.

Unfortunately, I can see why there may be numerous roadblocks to what you want to do.

Some examples from my personal experience in industry:

We wanted to weld part of a machine that couldn't be removed and taken to the maintenance shop....

"You would need a 'hot work' permit, the area will have to be roped off, and fumes will have to be vented outside of the building if other employees are in the immediate area."

I wanted to touch up some peeling floor coating and have my own personal stuff to do it....

"We would have to get a MSDS for the coating you'd use entered into the data base. We don't do that for something we won't be using regularly in the future."

An employee offered to install a light (for free) on our entrance sign at the driveway since he had almost crashed into it on night shift....

"He would have to go through our electrical safety course, and we only authorize that for maintenance personnel."

So.... These minor details will have to wait until maintenace gets around to them I guess. I can only imagine how long the Navy will take to get going on preserving the cannons.

numerous roadblocks

Yes there are if you are dealing with the mid-level of civilians, of course.  I used to be a Navy civilian employee and I could obstruct with the best of them.

If an admiral, either active duty or retired, decides something should be done about this, it will be done, and very quickly too.  The money will show up from somewhere, whatever regulations are holding things up will get waivers, etc.  One reason admirals get to be admirals is they learn how to get things done in the Navy.  They also would probably agree that if metal is corroding, you clean, prime, and paint it.

So that's my ultimate "target audience."

You know; in the past it would have been a Boy Scout project but that was during my era before sue, sue, sue.

I have a neighbour whose assignment in the Navy was to mow lawns. Maintainance. They paint a scrape don't they?  How about punishment?  OOPS!  Rehabilitation?  Are the Brigs empty?

Sadly; Victor made me laugh. What he described is so true; so common.  It is everywhere.  Everything in triplicate.  It's so sad.

The Oklohoma City bomber is now suing the federal government because he isn't getting enough whole grains in his diet.

It's so stupid. It's like living in a scene from Monty Python. Speaking of pythons: (Were we?) A 45" Milk snake slithered into our house last evening. I know it is 45" because it shed its skin in the laundry room.  It's under the 6' chest freezer. We're waiting for Divine Intervention or a good Plan B. :-\
