Illinois Laws
« on: June 22, 2009, 11:15:09 AM »
I have read that Federal Laws say little about muzzle loading cannons and mortars, but can someone provide a link about the state of IL.

We have some restrictive gun laws here and I am not sure about where these items fall....I have looked on several sites about gun laws including the State Police site.  There is nothing that I can find about them on the sites I have visited other than black powder and muzzle loading guns are considered firearms and one must retain a valid FOID card to own and opperate said items.....

I am not asking for legal advice just a push in the right direction will be fine!

Thanks,

JayAK

I should have said this on my other post - Welcome aboard.  I think you will enjoy it here.

Call your state DOJ. Might as well go straight to the source.
Or, talk with an attorney who specializes in firearms law.  The ILDOJ should be able to give you an answer free of charge.  Likely a lawyer would charge you.

JayAK -

I was in Taxachusettes when they passed their law requiring registration ID.  They put away a 15 yr old kid for a YEAR for taking his BB gun just off his property on the first day.

There is a reference in one of the stickies at the top of the listing of topics that lists the CFR # - a good place to start reading.  Key words are pre-1898 and replica.

Fireworks are another whole different category as are "signaling devices".

"Firearm" is a technical term, not to be loosely used.

AND then there is BATF and their 'rules'.

State and local laws are a different story.

WELCOME to the board and good luck!

Try your state organization (Illinois Rifle and Pistol Association?)

In "Taxachusetts" there are fire marshal implemented "regulations" on top of everything else, so don't forget to look there for something as well.

I'd really like to take my Dom built golf ball size Thunder Mug along with me when going back to Illinois to visit my kids.  Have a son down in the Peoria area and I know he'd appreciate having this little thing going off in his back yard.  I'd really prefer NOT to have him asking the local law enforcement folks about this as that'd be like turning himself in.....JayAK please be sure to let us know what you finally find out about shooting BP martars and cannon in that "wonderful liberal" State of Illinois with it's stupid STUPID firearms laws. ;D

I have looked over the Illinois state firearms laws....and there is nothing that I can see about cannons etc....they do however consider all muzzle loaders/black powder devices "firearms" thus you must have a FOID card if you are an IL resident....you must also have either the gun or the ammunition cased... so don't go driving in with the mortar in the back seat with a cardboard box filled with powder and balls....that would be a felony by the standards listed on the IL state police site.....

The only other issues that I could see coming up are noise/sound issues/ord. if you are in town...

OR

specific local ordinances against firearms....
here is a link to those...

http://www.isp.state.il.us/foid/ordinances.cfm

There are ordinances posted by town/city on the right side.....

I am not a lawyer....

So good luck!
