1st shot.
« on: June 26, 2009, 01:37:15 PM »
The new gun in our unit.  A Steen Cannon Works Iron Napoleon.  Full scale.  Heavier 'n hell.  This was a standard service charge for common shell (2 pounds - case and solid shot got 2 1/2 pounds).  Steens says no less than one pound. And at that we hit the cartouche just ahead of the midpoint.  We figured he should get one full load.  Friction primer by Fischer.  The gun weighs about 2600 pounds, and rocked back about a foot.  I'd love to see that at night.

Attribution for the photographer is in the lower right of the photo.  Gotta say, that is one heck of a photo.

Nice Photo, One of our battery members has a full scale bronze Napoleon and they do get heavy and go thru the powder. My Dominick's swivel is much more economical LOL.

Oh wow !!!  That could get real expensive real quick.  Think I will stick with my half scale Napoleon firing 10 shots to the pound.

Yeah, it does get expensive right quick.  That gun will go through about 50 pounds per event.  The unit will buy one case, the owner will buy one case.

I can somewhat muscle around a 3" rifle by myself.  Move it 20 or 30 yards on hard level ground without too much struggle.  This one, my GAWD!  I put the trail spike in the pointing rings, and tried to lift the trail.  Got it up.  Set it down.  Moving it for any distance is at least a 4 man operation.  6 would be better.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by a salute charge.

It was just the very first time this gun was fired, so the ower used a service charge of two pounds.  Saturday morning, the NCWA reeactment at Gibson Ranch in Elverta, CA (just north of Sacramento).  We fired by piece from the left so Christian (that is the name of the gun) would be the first on our gunline to fire that morning (actually, we had to wait for our second salvo - bad primer on the first go round).   Then we dropped down to one pound charges.  We could maybe cut back to about 12 oz. and still have charge under the vent.  I think if we dropped much below that the entire charge might be behind the vent.  That would not be good.

No projectile, just powder.  They take a VERY dim view of live fire at Civil War Reenactments.   ;)

Something about paperwork and insurance.  Although I would love to be able to do a live fire demo at one.
