We keep about 25 laying hens. We sell the eggs for around $3.00 a dozen. We make no money from them though we do supply our rather large family and friends with eggs and buy the feed with what we sell. If you count labor we loose money but we dont buy eggs and we do eat chicken regularly, too regularly for my taste!

WOW, $3.00 per dozen...  Around here you can buy them for $1.50 to $2.00 a dozen all over the place...  At 3 bucks, you'd never sell any.

We dont hold a gun to anyones head! We sell only to those willing to pay and we sell all we need to. There is a difference in store bought and free range eggs and people that know that are glad to pay for the difference. Not everyone pays the same, its kinda socialist in a way, from each according to his ability and to each according to his need. The difference is that "we" decide who gets the deal not the government.   ;)

My prices above ARE for brown free range eggs...  The stores sell eggs here on sale for anything from .50 per dozen, to a dollar a dozen.  Eggs are just plain cheap here!

Here they aint that cheap! and I mean at the Store!

Bottom line is we dont make any money selling eggs and didnt go into it to make any! but we do sell what we want to.

They sure aren't that cheap in my part of Bama. I suspect I paid more than a buck for the half dozen we got the other day for making some brownies.

Well they are just getting started!

Until the heat got so bad we were getting around 80 % /day
Now its around 50% but they are good large brown eggs.

They will drop off when they are moulting in the late summer and fall.

Kinda reminds me of the time a friend of mine had his nephew watch his place for a week while he was away. He called his nephew one night to check on things and his nephew said that he had to throw out all the eggs in the frig because they turned bad. He said " yup, they all turned brown in the carton, so I threw them out".
My friend still sputters when ever anybody says the word egg. I won't repeat what he called his nephew.

Just looked on a recently purchased can of Underwood Deviled Ham.  It has an expiration date of January 19, 2013.  Has more fat than protein.  However in a survival situation, you will need fat in your diet so you could stock up on something like this and rotate it out.  Not enough an it will kill you.  I read about someone who survived in the wilderness for about 2 weeks on rabbit, and he was severly needing fat.  Doctor said he would have died if not found in about a week due to lack of fat in his diet.  Guy did not eat the internal organs like the liver and heart, but only the legs and muscle meat which was extremely lean.
