Powder and Primer “Scalpers” on Auction Sites
« on: June 07, 2009, 01:13:37 PM »
I was just doing some reading at Accurate Shooter when I ran across this write-up. I figured I'd better get right back here and report it to you guys and gals for further inspection. ;) I believe this has to take the cake for panic buying. What I find sort of amusing and at the same time sort of sad, is that my favorite gun dealer has nearly an entire rack of Varget in stock for $22.00 per pound (and I sort of bitched because he had raised his price from $20.50) - I guess the fellow below who recently paid $89.38 per pound wouldn't find that too humorous.

Here's the link to the original article:

Powder and Primer “Scalpers” on Auction Sites
Filed under: Reloading, ▫Articles — Tags: Gouging, Powder, Primers, Varget — Editor @ 6 am

We all know that certain popular powders are very hard to find right now, and the situation for rifle primers is even worse. With increased demand from various sources, available supplies of Varget and other powders have dried up, creating incentives for some folks to resell powder and primers at windfall prices.

Recently, one 8-lb jug of Hodgdon Varget sold for $680.00 on Gunbroker.com. You read that right — SIX hundred eighty dollars. Add $35 for shipping and hazmat fees and you’re talking $715.00 for a jug of Varget, or $89.38 per pound, nearly four times the going price before the “panic buying” started.

Eighty-nine bucks for a pound of powder is crazy. We caution our readers not to get caught up in such nonsense. First, if you can’t find a particular powder, such as Varget, there are good alternatives available at reasonable prices. Norma 203B is an outstanding powder, very similar to Reloder 15, that works well in place of Varget. Grafs.com has plenty of 1-lb cans of Norma 203B in stock, Item Number: NP203B1, priced at $24.99 per pound. (That price includes shipping but not Haz Mat fees.)

We also expect the supply situation to stabilize in the next few months. Hodgdon recently received 22,000 pounds of Varget powder. Those supplies (along with other Hodgdon powders) should make their way to vendors soon, and that should relieve some of the shortages which encourage price-gouging.

As for the primer situation, things should remain tight for a while. All the primer makers are running at full capacity, but it could be some months before we see normal primer inventories at most large retailers.

It's an auction... the seller is not forcing the bidder to make a higher bid.
No one is saying the buyer got a good deal.

I'm with you on that Hairtrigger. No one said the buyer had to purchase it. And I suppose if I had lots of money to just play with, I might have paid that much too if I felt that I just had to have it. ;) But that fellow who bought it, sure must have thought he was never going to see Varget again.

A new sporting goods store opened up recently. We went there last week to see the ammo. He had Win ball 9mm in ziplock bags, 25 rds each, priced at $24.95 a bag. No wonder he has ammo. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Well, you know it's pretty obvious that the powder wouldn't have gone for that price without a consenting buyer. But that's not the point. This purchase has "panic" written all over it. I can understand a little panic, but paying $715.00 for 8 lbs. of Varget is pushing the limits of panic. Just my opinion though.

Nobody put a gun to the buyer's head and forced him to bid.

I knew when I saw the ridiculous price on the 9mm ammo that I would never do business with people like that. Took me 3 months to get 2 bulk pks of Federal 22 lrhps at work. We have very little pistol ammo at my walmart. Have some 22 mag and 17 cal that just sits there. No 38s, 380, 9mm, 45s, etc. Be glad when this stupidity is over with. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:(

the  only thing  i see negative  is

THAT BUTER  HAS SHOWN  THE MANUFACTUREERS  WHAT THE MARKET WILL  BEAR

bit  then again   that price  prompt some one  to BECOME  a powder manufacturer

or  the manufactureers to step up production
