« on: June 02, 2009, 04:53:50 AM »
i  have run accross a few old guns lately with out serial numbers

i was told they were  old and originaly produced with out numbers

is this true?
are they legal to own?
at what time  were serial numbers required?

i  also could not find any place they had been  removed
which  is definatly  a no no.....but not sure when that law went into effect
when drugs are outlawed only out laws will have drugs

There was a time when serial numbers were not required.  Many guns made during that time did not have numbers.  As far as I know they are legal, know a few people that own those old relics.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I have owned a few of them - mine were "wall hangers," old damascus barreled double guns, etc.  Yes they are legal. Wikipedia says they became required as of GCA 1968, but I think it must have been much earlier than that because I just haven't seen anything less than about 70 or 80 years old without a serial number.

Removing a serial number, or possessing a firearm with a removed serial number is a big time crime.  I'm sure you know that but I don't even like posting on this subject without acknowledging that.

I have an old Stevens 325 30-30 that has no serial number.
99% of all Lawyers give the other 1% a bad name. What I find hilarious about this is they are such an arrogant bunch, that they all think they are in the 1%.

I have a early 1960's Western Auto - Revelation Model 300 12 ga. shotgun that was manufactured by Savage (as a knockoff of their Model 30) and research indicates they didn't put SN's on their own shotguns until after 1968, when the feds required it.

That's interesting.  Must have been GCA 68 then.

I found this resource on proofhouse.com in case anyone is interested - should help with guns manufactured for retailers.

There are many guns from pre-1968 without serial numbers. Some of them are sought after and will bring a premium price on the used market.

The Garcia Bronco was made without serial numbers. It was a wire butt single shot. I wish I'd kept mine.

The rumor was that serial numbers made them too expensive for the market.

It became a federal law for guns to have serial numbers in the mid 60's, after JFK was killed.  Alot of guns made before that didn't have serial numbers.  The guns w/o serial numbers are still legal to own, and are suppose to be classified antique weapons.
Beware of the man that carries a single shot rifle, because there won't be any warning shots!!!

The Gun Control Act of 1968 was the beginning of the downfall of firearms and ownership and all the laws.   Jim
